Following the advice of one of the posters on this forum, I just finished reading "Strong on Defense". I found it to be a big help in crawling up the learning curve from "competent shooter" to "ready to carry".

For me and my situation, the most helpful info from this book was the real life stories ...

Can't say I see the relevance of your comment about crack dealers. That alley is used day and night by all kinds of people, men and women, for all different reasons, This incident is the ONLY violent incident I'm aware of in the 4 years I have lived there.
