Recommend some Android Apps.

#1

Post by G.A. Heath »

So folks, I need some recommendations for apps to us on my new Android phone. I am specifically looking for hunting and shooting related apps. I could do a google search, but that won't let me ask questions about the apps from those who recommended them. So what do you guys recommend?

Sorry, I use a Palm Pre ...

(I know this is not particularly helpful to you. But I had to get a plug in for the best mobile OS out there.) :biggrinjester:

I upgrade from a Palm (pre-Pre model) to something with more features than I have been able to learn in 48 hours.

WebOS really is a great OS, the best IMO. But like Betamax - it may go the way of the dinosoar under the heels of the more popular competitors. I am hoping that the HP purchase will breath some life into it. We should see some new devices, phones and tablets, early next year. But it might be too little too late.

But, at least you didn't get a diePhone. We can still be friends. :biggrinjester:

Yeah, sorry to hijack your thread. How about this - I'll recommend some of my fav Pre apps. I'm pretty sure there are Android versions of them.

Pandora - one of my top favs - I stream music while I drive - like having my own radio station

The Weather Channel

MyQ - Netflix queue manager

ExpressNews

Fandango

Angry Birds

I'm not that big of an app person, more of a web/multimedia/text user which is the primary reason I own a smartphone, but I have found some pretty nifty apps for my Nexus One.

Not all of them are hunting or firearms related but I think they are quite useful, unlike apps that make lightsaber sounds (fun for scaring the dogs though) or games/timekillers.

Ulysse Gizmos - Compass, GPS status monitor, level/clinometer, magnetometer.

Compass - Self explanatory

StopWatch & Timer - Also self explanatory

Shooter - Bullet Ballistics app, a bit advanced for me since I'm not much of a rifle person/marksman.

OI Notepad - Simple notepad app

OI Shopping List - Simple shopping list app

Bubble - A level app

gStrings - Guitar tuner (if you're musically inclined, I'm not but it's nifty anyway)

Lookout Mobile Security - Security app, 2 neat features among the list are that it backs up your images to a webserver every so often. I read a story about 2 kids who stole a Droid and snapped photos of themselves, the images were uploaded to the webserver and the owner of the phone was able to download the images and ultimately, he helped the authorities catch the 2 criminals. Also, if your phone gets stolen and you have a way to log on the internet (friend's smartphone perhaps?) you can remotely trigger an alarm and it'll tell your phone to "scream" until you disable it via the web interface.

MagicMarker - An app that lets you draw on screen with your finger, has a flashy neon UI, but I think it could be useful for drawing quick messages like "help" or "call 911" discretely. I've only found myself using it in bars though, when I've gotten a little stupid...I wrote "close out tab" once and showed it to the bartender when it was really loud; and tried drawing a heart and showing it to some girls at bars as an icebreaker (doesn't work :P)

Well, I have found a bunch of apps myself.

For hunting I use:
MoonPhase Widget
Google Sky (lets me see exactly where the moon will be rising from)
Waypoint Free (for the GPS functions)
Google Earth (also for the GPS functions)
Compass
Solar and Moon Calculator (determine sun/moon rise and set)
The Weather Channel app (planning and monitoring weather conditions)

along with the following apps that came installed on the phone:
the Calendar (planning)
and the Camera and Gallery apps (for bragging).

Other apps I have installed and use frequently and rarely are:
Twitter (I somewhat frequently use this)
Facebook (sometimes use it)
the Browser app
the Email app
the gMail app
Firefox 4 Beta
ConnectBot (For accessing/controlling my PC and server via SSH)
IM apps (rarely used but include: ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN messenger)
Google Listen
Pandora
Youtube
Sprint Football
AllShare (Samsung app that came with the phone)
Battery Doctor
Speed Test
Bump
Android Command Shell
and Where's my Droid (I installed, but haven't used it)

Well, those are the apps I have found useful so far.

Shooter, not free but quite good if you are into technical shooting. Well maintained and more options than I can use.
