amusing trip to Wal-Mart

#1

Post by too-tall »

About six months after I received my CHL, I went to the local Wal-Mart. After doing some shopping with the wife I decided to purchase a new pocket knife. After it was rang up, they called for a manager to "walk" me and the knife out of the store. I knew they walked firearms but I didnt know about this.
Here I am carring a PT-92 with an extra mag, 31 rounds total, been in here over an hour and now I am being walked out because I have a little pocket knife!!!!
It was all I could do to not start laughing out loud. I had tears in my eyes as we got to the front door and I barely managed to tell him I wasnt through shopping yet. He said just put the knife in the truck and come back in.
I wanted so badly to tell him why I was laughing so he wouldnt think I was crazy...............

Yep, that is kinda crazy. While pistol packin', I've also got "the escort" before with new shotguns.

BTW, too-tall ya must not have been hitched long enough to know the "proper" punctuation is The Wife.

Happens to me as well at Wall Mart and Academy. Heck I use my CHL to get past the call in back ground check and so anyone with a brain would place bets on the fact that I am carrying. But I am still walked out the door then handed what every pistol or rifle I have paid for. Any one else been told they could not buy ammo and a rifle or pistol at the same time? Had that problem once at Academy. Put the rifle in the truck, then went back in and got ammo. Make not a lot of sense to me.

I went in to buy my daughter a single shot .22, and the guy knew my profession because I showed him a card that by-passed the background check. He then had to walk me to the door knowing full well I had a 1911 with two extra mags. Can't see the forest for the trees.

Gibsons in Weatherford last year bought SW500 and 2 boxes of ammo, NO problem ! The guy was very nice and continues to be, I visit at least once a month to see what else they have that I can't live without :) Good prices on ammo and guns both !

I would have been laughing at them. Was this in Cleveland, Ohio ?
Never had this kind of stupidity at our local Walmart.

I guess I'm just lucky or I look harmless.

I buy ammo all the time at Wal-Mart. I'm never told I have to pay at the sports dept. I put it in my basket and finish shopping with my wife. No big deal.

I shop at the Wal Mart on 518 and Dixie farm road halfway between Friendswood and Pearland.

Sometimes I shop at the one in Alvin. No problems there either.

I have never bought a gun from WalMart. Don't know what actions that would bring.

The pistol and rifle ammo is behind the counter at my local Wally-World:)
The shotgun ammo is usually sitting out in the isle. Pistol ammo and a few pocket knives that I've purchased from that section required payment but then they just sacked it up with receipt stapled to the bag and I finished shopping. Maybe I should buy one of the guns just to see how they handle it.

There was a similar discussion about Wal-Mart's policy over on ar15.com a while back.

Basically Wal-Mart has a silly corporate policy about walking out firearms that is not enforced everywhere. And another one selling guns with ammo (even if the ammo can't be used in the gun  )

Apparently they had a few parking lot suicides and the lawyers stepped in. Absurd corporate policy followed.

I haven't heard anything about walking out pocket knifes. As far as I know Wal-mart still has axes and other rather deadly tools laying out in the aisles...

As a side note, I was buying 2 boxes of Winchester .45 FMJ ammo at the Wal-Mart in Kemah last night and decided to check it over before paying.

One of the boxes was good. The other had 5 rounds of Winchester FMJ and the rest of the ammo was unjacketed. Slightly different colored brass that looked like reloads. I ended up walking out with only one box of ammo. Just a warning out there to check over their ammo before you buy. I've never had an issue with Wal-Mart ammo before, but I'm going to be extra careful in the future.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look closer next time. Gibson's doesn't seem to have the stupid policy that Walmart does. Last week I observed a Gibson's customer pay for a shotgun and walk out (from the back of store) with it. This is the only Gibson store that I know about still in business, so it may be locally owned.

No, it was Cleveland Texas, Not Ohio.
I didnt think about their axes. I wonder if they walk them out too. One time in Livingston Texas I bout a Ruger 10/22. The manager walked me out while she was carrying the rifle(cute little thing too).
When we got to the door I said "theres my truck over there". She smiled real big and said "sorry, I only go as far as the door. The rest is up to you. Once you leave the door you are on your own."
Like I said, she was a prettyb little thing.

Too Tall[/quote]Thanks, I suspected it was a stupid question on my part :) Had to study the map to find Cleveland and Livingston since I don't go to East Texas much. Maybe 25 years ago I was near Lufkin. Anyway they seem like small towns and I wouldn't expect that kind of liberal mindset. Maybe it's just too close to Houston :) Can't help but wonder if they escort you out with a silverware purchase... and don't forget the letter openers !

I have an update on the Kemah Wal-Mart ammo issue.

Went to the Kemah Wal-Mart last night. Asked for Winchester .45 ammo. Got the exact same box (with 5 Winchesters and 95 reloads) that they tried to sell me last time. :x

Guess they don't care? Talk about lawsuits if that ammo is bad! No telling what quality it is!

I guess the box will go to the first guy who's not smart enough to check it out first. Scary.
