Pssssst, they do...
They sure do. It is really rare for the autopilot to screw up (but it does happen) but much more likely for the pilot to screw up. I bet 95% of every commercial flight is done by the autopilot. There is value in automation. There is danger too but usually the human error. Like the recent crash of a plane in the Gulf of Mexico with a physician flying at altitude probably without oxygen and on autopilot until he ran out of gas and crashed. Would not be the first time the autopilot did it's job and the human failed.

I currently drive a 1952 Chevrolet, and own 5 other antique vehicles. I have no intention of ever buying a new car. I don’t care if the technology is perfected, I enjoy driving and have no intention of giving it up.

So what happens when there's large-scale political and/or civil unrest if they government holds the keys to your car? There's revolution so to slow down their enemies, the government deactivates every car with a self-driving chip? This is exactly the issue (well, one of them) with smart guns.

What happens if you're in the boonies and you get injured somehow and have to drive yourself to the hospital while bleeding profusely? Romp on the gas pedal all you like - the car doesn't care that you're dying. It will control your speed and calmly tell you "the speed limit is this area is 60 mph."

What happens if you take evasive action but the car doesn't sense the danger, so it cancels your steering wheel control because it thinks you fell asleep at the wheel? What happens if...etc, etc.

I know these are slightly outlandish examples, but they are no more improbable than the government coming for our guns (like we are all so defensive about). I for one will NEVER own a self driving car. And if the government mandates it, all the more reason to buy some old car and learn everything about it. I distrust the government far more than I distrust my own driving abilities.

So, who goes on trial for vehicular manslaughter? Can the self-driving car be tried as an adult human?

Could the person in the driver's seat have hit the brakes or is it only self driving when in that mode? I'm not sure how those work..

My understanding form other articles that i have read is that there was a "driver" behind the wheel and if he had seen the events he could have taken control of the vehicle simply by hitting the breaks. No word as to whether he didnt see because he couldnt or just was not paying good enough attention.

probably a 'defective product' and/or 'wrongful death' lawsuit. No criminal culpability because no one is 'in charge'.

To the autonomous vehicle industry, these deaths are "collateral damage ".

The police chief of Tempe, Arizona, where a woman was struck and killed by one of Uber’s self-driving cars Sunday, says the ride-sharing company is likely not at fault for the accident, following a preliminary investigation.
