The number of new gun licences issued on the Gold Coast has risen 36 per cent in the past two years, nearly double the increase across Queensland, with one criminologist attributing the rise to fears over home invasions.

"Mr Haines said it was futile for residents to depend on a gun for self-defence in their home, as firearms have to be dismantled and stored in a secure safe, separate from ammunition."

Recent unsolved shootings have included a police officer trying to stop an armed robbery in progress (I have to assume he was unarmed), and an unarmed home owner who was the victim of a home invasion. They suggested having a bat for home protection as the time required to assemble your gun might be five minutes. Some people wanted licensed gun owners to be required to keep their guns at their sporting club. Apparently young people now carry knives for self protection. I suspect there are already laws on the books about knives, with bat laws not far behind.

It looks like their "you'll be safer if we take away your ability to defend yourself" sales pitch has worked out about as well as our "hope and change."

Gun licence spike OK with Gold Coast cops

Gold Coast police are assuring the community a rise in new gun licences in the troubled region does not translate to rising gun crime.

Regional crime coordinator Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson says he doesn't believe licensed gun owners pose a threat to the community, or contribute to the level of crime.
Superintendent Hutchinson says the figures have no bearing on the crime rate.

"Self defence is not a reason to get a gun licence and our experience is that these offences aren't committed by licensed gun holders anyway, generally they're unlicensed firearms," he told reporters on Friday.

"We generally don't have any issues with licensed gun holders."

This guy is proving the argument to his point. Of course, licensed gun owners don't pose a threat to the community unless you count the crooks as part of the community. On the flip side, I don't know how he can say with a straight face that legal gun owners don't contribute to the crime level. The more of them there are the lower the crime level. Why else would the number of new license applicants be on the rise? They took them all away and the crime rates began to rise.

Hello! If you don't have issues with licensed gun holders then get those licenses approved and watch what happens.

Sounds like the Aussies have thought of everything. They want to make it really hard for your incarcerated evil gun to reassemble and load itself before it starts on an unprovoked murderous rampage. Never can be too careful, can you?

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I guess they don't realize that the safest place for a loaded gun is in a holster and on the hip of a responsible gun owner. Usually takes less than 5 minutes to deploy also.

I know you know it's worked out exactly as intended.

Uh, well, as it so happens, I was cleaning it when the thugs broke in and was just about to disassemble it for safe storage. :evil2:

Licensed gun owner has his guns seized after confronting a man with knife at 3 am at his house. He used his unloaded .22 rifle as a essentially a prop to force the man into submission.

His permit to have the guns for varmit control is under review. The police would have preferred him to just call 911 and wait.

In my mind, I've always imagined Australians as tough, rugged, take no bull kind of people. Sadly, that image seems to be pure fantasy. Or, perhaps that is the spirit of the people, but, they've been neutered by their government. Let us take a lesson from our friend down under, and never let that happen to the USA.

The recent stabbing of a doctor inspired the drafting of new legislation to control knives. Though well intentioned, this effort is misguided.

It is not so much knives, but rather handguns that are doing the most damage. Revolvers and pistols were responsible for 42,416 of Brazil´s jaw-dropping 56,337 murders in 2012. Across the country, gun-related homicide has increased by 387% since the 1980s

:iagree:
I always loved that James Garner movie (Support Your Local Sheriff) where he was just passing thru "on his way to Australia". Growing up I considered Australia as 'Texas II' and thought that, like Garner's character, I could always emigrate there if it got too screwed up here. Then somewhere in the 80's things started to go horribly wrong......now it's just another place I won't go.....

How disassembled do the guns have to be? I can reassemble a fully field stripped Glock in about 30 seconds, and that assumes I am groggy from having just woken up. 5 minutes seems like a very long time for anyone familiar with modern handguns.
