Now, under current Texas law, it would be aggravated assault.

I don't think you would see officers pointing weapons at drivers today. The police have no more "right" or power to point weapons at innocent people than we hoi polloi do.

Nor would you see temporary deputies who were not certified LEOs performing that kind of function.

Years ago, this kind of stuff happened, and nobody lost sleep over it. I remember going to the bank with my parents in the early 1960s. They had men with shotguns on a mezzanine or balcony overlooking the floor of the bank.

At that time people were still alive who remembered John Dillinger and Bonny and Clyde.

BTW, John Dillinger was killed 77 years ago today (July 22, 1934).
