Absolutely. The song Gloomy Monday, wholly instrumental, was even banned in some places because it was said to lead people to commit suicide.
Gloomy Sunday perhaps?

Oh, well if we can include acoustic instrumentals, I can't forget this...

He's a bit notey sometimes, but my word... As one of the YouTube commenters says, "I thought I played guitar. I was highly mistaken"

I've always been partial to "The Eyes of Texas" myself. \m/

There is a picture of me in the 1967 or 1968 Cactus yearbook holding the original manuscript from the Texas Ex-Students safe. I was in the Longhorn Band while in college and still play in the Alumni Band whenever possible.

What instrument? My dad was a trumpet player in the Aggie band '74-'77. I played through high school but was on to bass guitar and through with brass by college. Thanks to a realignment, we went to state marching competition 3 years, and traveled a bit during the off year so I got burned out by my senior year.

Since its a song thread, I love a lot of the stuff the Aggie band plays, but a song most everyone else might recognize as well is "The Ballad of the Green Berets".

For those who may have never heard it, it has lyrics too:

I'm a tuba player. I worked my way through high school and college playing in polka bands in the hill country, at Wurstfest etc., the SPJST in Temple, the ones in Waco, Cat Springs, Dessau Hall, all over Texas pretty much. All this was 40-50 years ago, of course.

The Aggie Band played "The Ballad of the Green Berets" so much that it became to them almost like the Eyes of Texas to the Longhorn Band!

The Longhorn Band, under Vincent DiNino, was the greatest organization I have ever been part of, absolutely fantastic. Back then, DiNino had nearly 500 kids in the band, most between 18 and 25, a few older, who would rather die than let the others down. All were spectacular musicians. Striving for excellence, and executing it, was a way of life. We played the football games, including the Orange Bowl in 1964/65 against Alabama, went to the Inaugural Parade in 1965.... pretty heady stuff for a 19 year old from the hill country, too much fun!

"Country Roads" - John Denver (takes me back to my early stompin' grounds)
Skiprr wrote:"Lunatic Fringe," by Red Ryder. Little known, but the first track on all my workout mixes.
100% absolutely Skiprr...and also "Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor (for me)

"Amazing Grace" - The rendition by the Kenova, WV United Methodist Church at my Grandma's funeral.

"I Cross my Heart" - King George (first dance with my wife at our wedding)

"I can only Imagine" - Mercy Me

...along with only about a few hundred more...

Another fun one is Lateralus by Tool.

Sometimes fans overthink things, but it is pretty cool how the lyrics to Lateralus tie into the Fibonacci sequence. You can even reorder the album using the Fibonacci (complicated and crazy explanations for how to do this can be found online "rlol" ) and the songs flow together in a smoother fashion when they're played in this order: 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10

Here's a video to the song Lateralus explaining a bit about the Fibonacci and how its tied into the song and the album as a whole.

Even if you're not a modern music/rock fan try to make it through a minute or two before you give up on it.

It means something to me because its a good way to live life (Always expanding, seeking, learning) and just a really cool little "hidden" thing to be in an album. Plus I actually like most of Tools stuff. :cheers2:

Anyway, enough rambling, check out the video:

Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Van Morrison (blame my wife), Leo Kotke, Willis Allen Ramsey (currently listening), Boz Skaggs, Santana, Keiko Matsui, Edith Piaf, Rachmaninov (vespers)...

and a hundred other artists. I have very eclectic tastes.Music is moving. There is no one song that catches my throat when I hear it; there are hundreds.

If the 90's is really old, I must be ancient! I was born when Carter was President...heck, I'm a fossil!

I love 90's music.

I already posted two 90's song: The Freshman by The Verve Pipe and Scar Tissue by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

To keep up with that 90s theme, how about some Alice in Chains?

I like this song because of the story behind it. This song was written by Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell for his father Jerry Cantrell Sr., who went by the nickname "Rooster" while serving with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His dad was an M60 gunner with the 101st who served 2 tours in Vietnam.

Anyway, here's Rooster by Alice in Chains. I think its a pretty powerful, emotional song.

Layne Staley could sing. I was upset when I learned I had missed A Perfect Circle!

I can’t believe no one spoke of the greatest love song of all time. George Jones “He Stopped Loving Her Today”.

I can fill up a page of songs of the love that I have for my wife.

Let me know if you agree.

Believe me I am not country.
