Yes, via getting a hunter permit or other sporting defense. If I recall correctly.

But yes, as they should be able too.

Remind me. Can a non citizen legally in the country possess a gun in the US or Texas?
Yes. As numerous non-citizen (or previously non-citizen) members of this board have shared over the years. See AndyC if he is still around.

Lawful permanent residents LPR (aka green card) and other resident vs. non-immigrant visa types need not even get the hunting license or invitation to firearm competition workaround.

Somewhat related but I remember watching the movie Texas Killing Fields a few years back regarding this very thing. Pretty good movie from what I remember and I see it's streaming for free on a few platforms.

Motive? These animals don't require motive. No self control, just start shooting at each other. Our so called "justice system" keeps letting the thugs back out on the streets to commit more crimes.
Houston police identified the suspected shooter as Brayden Smith, 17, who has been charged with murder. The other suspect was identified as Patrick Scott, 18, who was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Court records show Scott was in court on an unrelated charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon on Tuesday, a day before the shooting. He was recently released from custody after his bond was lowered from $50,000 to $15,000 in November. That charge stems from an incident last summer.

According to Houston police, Smith fired the shots that killed the victim. Scott allegedly returned fire, injuring another passenger.
