Mine plastic was delivered yesterday via UPS. I guess because I emailed Rick Perry for assistance. :txflag:

I am not resorting to daily prodding via email.

here was today's email:

Hello,

I am writing again to check on the status of my application:

It is over 90 days now and I have reliable reports of many people who filed after the beginning of June whose licenses have already been issued, and a number who even filed as late as July who already have the license issued.

If there is nothing that is slowing down the progress of my application then why is it that those who filed over a month later are already receiving their license?

Please forward detailed information on the progress of my application.

The last correspondence said it was awaiting "background checks". Is there any more specific information? Is this the FBI background check? The county I live in? What is the normal time that these checks are completed, and how long has it been since mine were begun? What is the process once these checks are complete? Is there no way to prompt or accelerate the completion of these checks? I have absolutely no criminal history of any kind.

Regards,

Can I use that??? I just hit 140 days and am still in the "processing application" black hole.

be my guest :)

I plan on sending something very much like this at least 2-3 times a week until I get my app completed.

I also emailed my state rep (lotta good that'll do) and maybe I'll hit up the Gov. today.

I would recommend emailing Gov. Perry. My state rep did nothing for me but Gov. Perry sent a message to the DPS big wigs to get the move on for my application.

Well, two days after I sent my last email to the CHL folks complaining that July applicants are getting their licenses ahead of those of us who applied in May, and requesting more specific answers, I received a reply from a supervisor. I don't know if it matters but I also contacted my state rep in that same time frame.

Here's the reply:
Mr. 72,
I have received your inquiry regarding the status of your application. The processing appears to be nearly complete, at this point we are awaiting field investigation results. I will see if obtaining them may be expedited, determine when you should receive your license and then contact you. Once your license has been issued, I will send it to you via priority mail and provide a tracking number. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at anytime.

Sincerely,
Mr. Supervisor
We'll see whether he makes good on the promise to contact me regarding when I should receive my license.

Pushing 100 days now.

This is the first time I have heard the terminology "field investigation results". I wonder what that means.

EDIT: They have actually emailed me back twice today, once with more detail, and once with a loose commitment to provide me with a more firm date for when this should be complete by the end of the day today.

Here is the answer to my latest e-mail to DPS, using the borrowed letter above posted by mr.72.

Mr. Johnston,

Thank you for the chance to clarify what exactly is happening with your
application.
Your application was received on 4/8. We began the initial processing
of your application shortly after it was received. Your file was
started, reviewed for errors and omissions; we also started working on
the production of your physical license, and part of the background
investigation was started. Your application was fully entered into the
system on 7/19. This is when we were able to start the other part of
the background investigation. We are still waiting for the background
investigation to finish.
While your application has been processing, we have introduced numerous
procedural changes to have applications processed more quickly. You
noted a result of these changes when you commented that some applicant's
are receiving their licenses within sixty days.
The background investigation that we are waiting on is completed by a
third party and is unique to each person who is applying. Some
background investigations take longer than others; this is not the
result of anything negative in the history, but largely because everyone
is unique and some take longer.
Please be assured that we are working to process your application as
quickly as possible and that we are simply waiting for these background
investigations to be returned to us.

Texas Department of Public Safety

I got a email from the Gov's office yesterday. They are looking into it also.

Class 5/17/08
Application received by DPS 5/21/08

Received letter that my picture was to dark 2 weeks ago. Had to have new photo taken. I held it for a couple weeks since my Birthday in within the 1st 2 weeks of September. So hopefully license will not be issued until after my Birthday.

I just got this email today-
Mr. 72,
Your license will be mailed to you today via priority mail. I will
provide you with a tracking number afterwards.
Sincerely, the supervisor
Priority mail from Austin to the Austin suburbs is overnight.

I guess I should have my plasitc by tomorrow.

BTW my status still says "Processing Application" and as of yesterday they were still waiting for a background check from Williamson County. Seems they must have pre-printed the license and therefore they could send it ASAP once the checks were complete.

Class taken 5/4 (el Gato)
App mailed 5/6
DPS Received 5/9 (certified mail)
Processing App 7/22
Called Rep's office 8/7 - Day 90 (thereabouts)
Called by DPS saying permit should issue "in a few days" 8/14
Called Rep's office again 8/27
Finished application found by DPS at the bottom of a stack somewhere 9/3 :mad5
Application (should have) shipped this morning 9/4 - Day 118

Hopefully this time it was actually sent out when they said it would be. Very early on, I made it very clear to my Rep's aide that DPS reform had better be on his '09 agenda. We'll see what happens.
