Where can I get one of those selfloaders? I get tired of having to fill the clips with boolits.
Seriously....it doesn't matter what you call them. The vast left-wing conspiracy will demonize them anyway.

How about this:
Semi-Automatic Rifle (Carbine) That Is Really Awesome Looking, But Is Actually Less Dangerous In Comparison To A Handgun
We could call it a SAR(C)TIRALBIALSICTAH
It just rolls off the tongue, and it would guarantee that the media would shut up about having to report what type of weapon is used, giving less ammo to (get it? AMMO) the antis.

About a year and a ha;f ago I heard some one refer to a handgun as an autoloader I like the term its pretty descriptive and accurate, although I don't have a problem with calling a semi auto either. When I was younger autoloading handguns were often called 'autos' that usage has faded away.
What really makes me laugh is when folks get all uppity about calling a revolver pistol.

When I went to get my ar-15 this weekend I was chatting with a clerk while the other was running my paper work. He asked "So, what made you decide to get an assault rifle?" I guess it's not just the media.

yeah, some dipstick at Cabela's says to me, "Why you want an assault rifle? you're freaking everyone out in here!"
I rolled my eyes, informed him of his ignorance, and got some help from someone else...

And hopefully informed his supervisor!

no, it was late, I was already thoroughly irritated and had The Kid with me.
I told him the difference, paid for my bounty and left. everyone else in that area of the store was great. had to take something back a few days later, and even the return guy was cool. didn't want to let one loser bring down the morale (or collective IQ) of the rest of the store.
guy upstairs in the camping department showed me a rather inexpensive LED flashlight which was pretty nice, all things considered.
