Russell,
I have some sensitivity on this subject, so I must observe that to label this person as an "officer" would not be correct in the military context. He is (was?) a "petty officer" of an unstated grade. This is typical of the media.
While I have no evidence to support this piece of sheer speculation, I would be surprised if he were still a member of the Coast Guard. If the allegations here are true, and he is still in the service, then the CG's standards have suffered a great deal of late.

While I agree to some extent, as I pointed out in a previous post, NY State law did not in the past, and may still not, state more than "officer" without defining whether they mean commisioned, warrant, or petty. As a petty officer I took advantage of that fact, although I was never questioned about it, even carrying openly in NY and NJ (in uniform of course.)

Question...
What compels someone who has had their drivers license suspended continue to drive, for ANY reason, until the license is reinstated???
I mean, all the Coast Guard, Federal Law enforcement credentials, and other hoopla aside...This guy was in the middle of being punished for something he did wrong...
The fact that they found a loaded pistol in his vehicle is kinda moot, but topical for this forum, yet I see the fixation on that issue overriding that this guy was not adheiring to a court order...
I see a very poor decision made here, and he got caught...

He should still be prosecuted for those things. I haven't seen anyone here say differently.

Ummm... they need to be somewhere else?
It's not unusual for a DL to be suspended and the driver not even know it. I've read multiple reports of someone busted for DWLS, who had no idea. Sometimes it's legit (they didn't pay a ticket), other times it's not (someone improperly keyed in that they didn't pay a ticket, when they had).
A suspended license, or no license at all, doesn't make someone unsafe.
