Mars & I were about to go over Slumber Falls while tubing the Guadalupe (New Braunfels) when we noticed a few buzzards perched conveniently on a branch about ten feet down from the falls. We decided that they new something we didn't, so we took the less adventurous route downriver.

We actually have a permit to shoot them out at our ranch (Montgomery County). We have had problems for years with the white-wing tipped ones. Believe it or not if you have a calf that is a little slow moving or a little sick they WILL peck it down and then peck it to death. I personally have come through a gate into a field and seen 50 just sitting around waiting for a scent.

We got the permit around a year or so ago I believe from the Agriculture Commision (my Dad set it up so I'm not totally sure how he went about it). My dad went and bought a Marlin .17 HMR bolt action with a Burris scope; I use a Marlin model 60 .22 semi-auto with open sights; brother uses a Remington 22-250 (I know it's over kill but it's what he has!); I'm not sure what all the ranch hands use. Sometimes if we know where some are hanging out (power lines, dead animal etc) I'll use my Remington 1100 Signature Series with turkey shot.

I must admit I'm tempted to catch one up close and use my Marlin 1894 .44 magnum with some Speer hollow point hand loads I use :thumbs2: . Or maybe a 12 gauge hollow point slug..... or maybe a 165 grain Spitzer boat tail out of my M-1A.... or maybe a 65 grain hollow point out of my AR-15.... ooohhh I hope we keep this permit for a while.... Sucks living so far away from home though!!
