What I want to know is since when did criminals start
buying guns? And, if they do, since when did they get them at Wal Mart? Puh-lease!!! Like this practice will cut out gun crimes in America.

To me, this boderlines on an invasion of privacy...Same goes for those "grocery discount cards" that track purchases...
Maybe I'm overreacting but hey, I thought having to take the "whiz quiz" to maintain a CDL was an invasion of privacy in a former life. I had nothing to hide, I'm not a doper (never have been), but I had to explain LEGAL prescription medications to a former employer that otherwise they would not have had knowledge of...sort of criminalized even though I was totally innocent.
Civil liberties slowly eroding...

My thoughts exactly.
OK, two people on this site have all of their teeth!

They are after the straw buyers, theoretically. Its a stupid idea that wont work anyway. I dont see invasion of privacy though, you are filling your life story on a 4473, flashing your chl and tdl in a public place. Hardly any expectation of privacy. What happens when that rifle is 5 FTF sales down the line? Video and records wont do anything. Now that i think about it, they have the 4473's already, what would video do?
This is one reason I try to buy stuff with cash if i dont want it "tracked". FTF sales are the way to go.

I'm not a lawyer, but I have a gut feeling that unless you are notified that they are going to record and save the video prior to purchasing the gun, then keeping the video record on file might cross a privacy line.
Whenever you go into a Walmart, you pass a ton of signs informing you that everything is monitored/recorded, but I believe that there is am implied understanding that the video monitoring is for safety and security reasons and is therefore not a permanently maintained item. Additionally, you are not INDIVIDUALLY identified in the general security monitoring video.
I'd be real interested to hear a legal opinion on this one. I'm going to see what I can find on my own too.

I didn't think about the straw purchase angle. But, the reality is, it won't stop a straw purchase, just deter it. I seriously doubt that there are a whole lot of straw purchases of Mossberg 500's and remington 870's and other utilitarian firearms hitting the streets through Wal Mart.
My opinion has no legal basis and is just that...an opinion. I just think it is a sad state of affairs that Wal Mart maintains "files" of how many heads of lettuce I buy each year along with my preference in underwear, deoderant, and you name it. I can't even buy sudafed with asking for it and presenting a DL for fear of being a tweeker. I just hate being inconvenienced or "looked at suspiciously" because of someone elses transgressions. A little Orwell-ian like 1984 if you ask me.
Now, a breath of fresh air was walking into Cabelas in Buda today and seeing the sign that said, "All firearms must be unloaded upon entering the store. This does not include CHLs." I love Texas!

After running out the permutations, here's the net result:
1. Almost nothing changes on Wal Mart's end.
2. Bloomberg and his coalition are pacified.
3. Lots of gun owners who were previously Condition White when it comes to privacy, have learned there's no such thing when shopping in any major retailer (and probably not in most small local gun shops).
Where's the downside? I don't see one.

"Bloomberg urged other companies to join
Walmart in the initiative called the "Responsible
Firearms Retailer Partnership".
"The mayor's gun summit also unveiled a new lobbying effort to close what they call The Gun
Show Loophole."
"The mayor's group is trying to gather support in
Congress to:" etc.
The downside is that now this well funded Anti-gun group has the largest firearms retailer in America as it's poster boy and this fact will be used to advance all the above.

Well, to shine some good news on the subject, it may all fall down the drain once implemented.
Many of you are familiar with TheLawDog and his blog. Well, if you head on over there, he gives a quick and dirty rundown of why this type of system is against Federal Law.
Check it out:
Wal-Mart is dead to me
We might see this disappear as quickly as it came. (here's hoping, they still have the cheapest ammo around these parts)

I suppose this means an end to the Wally Walk.
