It was in my day, too; but we didn't talk about wound channels in English class. - Jim

Let me start by thanking everyone for there opinions and advice. I served four years in the military, wear Anti-hillary shirts in an extreme libral enviroment, and wrote my english research paper over different rifle actions. I dont think writting an informative paper over a .40 S&W Springfield XD is going to send my teachers over the edge. However, I do understand everyones concern especially around the aniversary of VTech. I wanted to include a paragraph over the power of the .40 as opossed to a 9 mm or .38. I was hoping that this would be a good place to get some info for my paper without a massive amount of backlash.

We discussed Everything from the trajectory of a rockets to the shotgun slug to rocks.
You have to go through advanced physics in college now to learn about this stuff. My friend is taking this class, and this what his recent test was over. Says he hadn't seen this info before.

Here's a wish of good luck that they don't decide to send you to counciling, or start eyeing you suspicously. I hope you participated in the empty holster protest last week, we have to work hard to get our rights back.

Back on topic, good luck on your paper. Let us know how that turns out, if you want.

Find a formula for bullet kinetic energy here:

Knockdown power is not an accurate term when it comes to handguns, as no handgun round will knock someone over. If it won't knock over the shooter, it surely won't knock over the victim. I believe stopping power are the words you need. Good luck with your paper. And the campus cops if anybody freaks out.

Take a look at
www.stoppingpower.net lots of good info there. Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow wrote the books on Stopping Power, literally.

You wanta knock a guy down from a weapons impact hit him with an 8 pound sledge hammer,or a 2000 lb. car, also a lot depends on recipient is he under the influence of a drug that minimizes the initial impact of a bullet,or so enraged that he walks through it i've seen cop video where suspects were shot and didn't even indicate they were hit,by chasing or fighting with the officer til backup got there

In the aftermath of tragedies such as Virginia Tech, I have read that many college campuses are taking a dim view of any interest in violence, and that some professors, RAs/RDs, administration personnel, etc, have been "deputized" to be on the lookout for "suspect" behavior. Disclosing an interest in firearms, ammunition, ballistics, etc, could be interpreted to your disadvantage.
.
what if he's a Criminal Justice major? His interest in his major simply carried over into writings for his basics classes.
some times teachers talk about stuff Im not interested in, but I still gotta read it. This paper isn't being read by the whole class. If you know what it takes to get a good grade (which is somewhat dependent on the professor), then do that and take the good grade.

It depends on his professor or whoever grades the paper for his professor.

Stepping into the shoes of a college English professor for a minute, I would suggest winning over those in the classroom who might be offended by giving historical context before tearing right into "damage" and "stopping power" and all those words that show us to be "maniacs." Spend quite a while telling the history of 9mm and .45 in terms of law enforcement. Show what the FBI wanted and how .40 is superior blah blah blah. It would be a bit tougher for them to associate "guns are bad" with FBI stories. After all, only police and government agencies should carry, right? Then you can seamlessly transition into personal defense as a result of FBI testing. As with actual combat, present an obstacle to make yourself less of a target.

As many have stated, there's no such thing as "knock down power" in the literal sense. Here is an FBI study that might help you out:
