My comment was to the effect that the current regulation is confusing and that there are places where one can be a law-abiding good guy on one side of the road and a Federal felon on the other.

Thanks for making the effort.

I have to point out that carying a loaded weapon in a national park is not a felony. It is punishable by a maximum fine of $5,000 and six months in jail.

Couple years ago at Huntsville State Park along a hiking trail, I walked right up to a coyote having a very bad day, was in my Happy Place and not paying attention, walked within 50ft of this bad boy, You know sticks don't work when trying to protect yourself, if anyone finds my shoe, would Love to have it back.

Be sure and mention that the rule should be written so that Al-Quaida can not enter the parks with their MP-5s.

Of course if I take the serious and thoughtful route, I won't have to go into that scenario.

Got a great point there, Everybody wants to Bar the Good guys who could save the Day, but the Criminals will carry regardless, don't make sense to me.

So I have been invited to a Big Bend backpacking trip later this year, which brings me to my next question...

What kind of implementation timeline will there be if this goes through? I'd love to accept the offer, but have decided that I don't want to go into such a remote area without some personal protection. Anyone have any answer/guess to this?

The comment period runs through the end of June.

"Once the public comment period has closed, all comments received will be evaluated and incorporated into the decision making process on a final rule. The number and substance of the comments received will determine the timeline for the final decision."

I'm guessing any changes will go into effect pretty close to election day...
