UPDATE: Man Wanted for Allegedly Killing Trooper is Former Police Officer

The man who is the subject of a regionwide manhunt after allegedly killing a Texas state trooper was once a peace officer himself. Records with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education show the man wanted for the shooting death of trooper James Scott Burns, 39, of Linden during a high speed chase Tuesday night is a former lawman in Rusk County. Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Jean Dark said they are seeking 37-year-old Tyler resident Brandon Wayne Robertson in connection with Burns’ death.

Burns was killed when he was shot several times while in his patrol car. The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. by the intersection of Farm-to Market roads 1969 and 729 north east of Lake 0’ The Pines near Kellyville. DPS officials say a local citizen who attempted to provide aid to the trooper used Burns’ radio to call for help. Troopers developed the suspect’s name after talking to an incarcerated man who once owned the car involved in the incident. Dark said officials are seeking information to the whereabouts of Robertson and the blue 1997 Dodge Intrepid bearing Texas license plate 039-LCG that he was last seen driving. Dark said Robertson was last known to have lived just north of Tyler in the Eagle Creek subdivision in a travel trailer. The TCLOSE records show that Robertson worked for the Overton Police Department, the Kilgore Police Department and the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office. The record indicates he last served as a peace officer in 1999 when he left the Overton department, and shows he was a seven-year veteran officer who has been trained in police tactics. After leaving law enforcement, Robertson turned to crime and did four years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system for narcotics. The Gregg County Judicial Web site shows Robertson has a criminal history including unlawful carrying of a weapon, possession and manufacture/delivery of controlled substance and theft. Robertson is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Burns was the 83rd trooper in the agency’s history to be killed in the line of duty.

Anyone with information about Robertson is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.

What a worthless ,the one good thing is it's hard to duck under the radar with that kind of physique,people notice you and because they notice you you don't stay free very long.I would say since he was a felon in posession of a gun he was looking at doing 5 years plus he probably had drugs in the vehicle= more time.So instead of taking responsibility for his actions he decides to kill a man doing his job a man that held his sworn position to a higher level than this bottom feeder that took his life.If he is taken alive it would only be for a few years ,in Texas people that kill police officers get the death penalty.Tomorrow when i wake up i expect to see a headline where he was found and because he actually had officers ready to defend themselves gave up like the chicken he is,or even better pointed a weapon in their direction and 200 rounds later was pronounced dead

he's a coward, they all are. He will surrender.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,

He asked the guy for a driver's license,

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his pistol,
He died doing his best.

I just heard that they found the guy. Apparently he saved the tax payers some money, and killed himself.

Where/how did you hear this? Details?
WFAA (Dallas) has nothing so far.....I would suspect them to have a "Breaking News" announcement.

We have just learned that the suspected wanted in the shooting death of 39 year old Trooper Scott Burns committed suicide in Cass County.

The Texas Department Of Public Safety in Austin says suspect Brandon Robertson was found dead of a self-inflicted gun wound off of CR 1347 near Morris Lake in Cass County. He was discovered around 5 p.m. Thursday.

An alleged accomplice, Jennifer Lynne Petrick, 36, was taken into custody at the scene. Criminal charges are pending against her. Petrick was Robertson's girlfriend. She will be booked into the Cass County Jail.

Authorities had tracked Robertson through information gained from calls he made to a local 911 center, as well as through investigative tactics and many calls to a tip line that had been set up to give a $30,000 reward. Robertson killed himself as authorities closed in on his location.

Trooper Scott Burns, was killed Tuesday night after pulling over a car near Lake O' The Pines in East Texas.

Authorities say Burns didn't have a chance to remove his seatbelt as he stopped his patrol car, just before getting shot multiple times with a shotgun. A witness used the trooper's radio to call for help.

Brandon Wayne Robertson was an East Texas police officer for seven years at departments in Rusk County, Overton and Kilgore. He left law enforcement in 1999.

Robertson was arrested by Department of Public Safety troopers as recently as April 6, when he was charged in Cherokee County with possession of a controlled substance. He posted a $7,500 bond the next day.

Trooper Burns' car had four bullet holes in its windshield and one on the hood.

The violent and untimely death of DPS Trooper Scott Burns Tuesday night has had a double impact on our local TXDOT employees. Not only did we lose a fellow state employee, he was also the brother of (name withheld) in the Linden Maintenance Section. We also have several employees who are married to DPS troopers who worked with him. Scott left behind a wife, Michaela, and a five-month-old daughter (name withheld). Funeral services for Scott Burns will be held May 3, 2008 at 2PM at the First Baptist Church in Linden. Visitation will be Friday, May 2, 2008, from 6-8 PM also at the First Baptist Church.

I'm glad it's over, but saddened that this piece of offal finished himself in the trooper's hometown, where the funeral will be on Saturday.
