The length of time they (need to) stay on is pretty trivial but even though I didn't mention it our motion sensor lights don't come on unless it is both dark AND they detect something.

Look I'm green:

I am single and live alone. Both my children are grown and really only need me for occasional moral support. If I get killed doing something risky, like searching the neighborhood in the dark for a bad guy, they will all cry and miss me and then spend the money I leave them. After killing me, the worst thing the bad guy can do next is go into the house and steal my Crown XR stash and be gone.

What happens if the bad guy kills you in the yard and then goes into Your house? That is some real risky stuff...going out into the dark to protect your car.

Heck...even worse. What if a cop was responding and he sees a guy lurking around the house in the dark with a flashlight and a gun? He might just shoot you.
