You can drop a Glock and it won't go off. Only way you can get it to fire without manipulating the pistol to do so is to pull the trigger...

That's why the trigger is so long and heavy.
And, FWIW, a Sigma is similar to the dimensions of a M&P 9C.. .about 1/2" longer, a little longer grip (maybe 1/4"? it's shaped differently at the base...).
As far as a pistol with the features you are looking for, that is manual safety and DA/SA polymer gun dimensions like a M&P9C or smaller I would suggest a Taurus PT111 "Millennium Pro", although probably nowhere near the reliability and customer service rep of S&W, Glock, SA, etc.

After I shoot my new pistol a time or two, you're welcome to come to the range with me and try it out if you want, it's a glock 19, I haven't been able to shoot it since I got it last Sunday, but I can't wait to!

Maybe the SR9? Its a lot thinner although the other dimensions are about the same. it is DA with a decocker safety.

How about a Sig 225? Sigs have all the controls you are looking for, the 225 is 9mm and is the smallest one available. Military Gun Supply carries them. I have both a Ruger P95 and a Sig 229 and the controls and feel are very similar although the trigger is better on the Sig. The 225 looks to have the same controls as the 229 but is smaller.

Another vote for any CZ-75 variant. The P-01 is a good choice for carry because it has an alloy frame (lighter), a high-cap mag, and a rail, in case you are one of those who likes to hang crap off of it. There is also a model that comes with factory-installed Crimson Trace Laser Grips, which I highly recommend.
As has been said by others, CZ guns are very high quality, more accurate than 99% of us can shoot, and are priced less than many guns of inferior quality - one of greatest values out there, in my opinion.
