Not exactly true. It's a function of the aperture (opening) to determine depth of field. At f1.8, you can take a portrait of a person, the tip of their nose will be in sharp focus, but their ears will begin to blur.
The tip of their nose will be in sharp focus, the [front of their] ears will begin to blur, but the back of their ears won't be in sharp focus. They will be a little more blurred, unlike the trees.
