That's my basic class outline. It varies a little bit from class to class depending on the interests and needs of the students. If I have lots of new shooters, we spend more time on safety and proficiency. If I have mostly experienced shooters, we spend more time on conflict resolution and use of force. But those topics are the minimum you should expect from a CHL class.

The CHL class is not a basic pistol or "learn to shoot" class. It also is not a tactical shooting or self-defense class. It is mainly about the laws pertaining to Texas, gun safety, and avoiding bad situations.

I was just at your range last Sunday. I was actually thinking about leaving work early today to go shoot some. :)

I have been teaching since it started, 1995. I have certified over 1,000 people (including renewals). some I have certified 3 or 4 times.

The class is supposed to cover a lot of things - including the laws in TX. I am flexible, if you want to spend more time on laws, let me know and we can go into more detail. If you want to spend more time on the range, bring extra ammo.

It is true the course is scored pass/fail. I disagree that 'some' fail. It is designed for everyone to pass. You can take both tests three (3) times on the original class day. I have had 3 students that had to shoot a second time and 4 that had to retake the test. (If you cannot read, you can take the test orally. If English is a second language, bring an interpreter!)

Way to go bones! Now while you wait, just let your mind go to all the new things that you will have to have. You dont just want these things, you need these things, you cant make it without these things. Im still there. Congrat's John

I am not criticizing you AT all, just offering food for thought and offering some of my observations.

I am an instructor also. We have few who fail, and those who do are usually not due to poor shooting, but completely unsafe people who endanger those around them on the range (including me!) They are few and far between.

I do not allow interpreters in class as it disrupts and disturbs other students, and during the test I have no way of knowing who is answering the questions.

I have given the test orally a couple of times. I have found that some people just don't do written tests well, but when asked the question directly, they know the answer.

Just an update. Packet received in Austin on April 5th.
Got my pin today. 35 days; some folks have been waiting a lot longer
than that. Now enter phase two.

I have had a few with 'safety problems'. I spend more time working with them on safety. I have never had a negligent discharge at the range. That would cause them to fail.

It depends on class size. I probably would not allow an interpreter in a large class. I'd encourage them to schedule an individual class. I guess it is possible that the interpreter is giving them the answer. I do not know how to prevent that. TX DPS clearly provides for/allows interpreters. You are supposed to insure they recognize certain phrases in English - "Stop", "Put the gun down".
