I was at the Academy in Lewisville Saturday afternoon and the gun department was busy. Two folks were filling out forms and there were at least three other groups looking at handguns.

BTW for a recession, the stores were awfully busy this weekend.

I went to the Academy in Plano Sunday afternoon. he said they had ten AR style rifles sell within a couple hours of opening the store on Sunday. While I was talking to him I overheard three other guys asking when AR15 rifles would be back in stock. The guy told me it has been like this since a day or so before Obama got elected. They hardly have time to put the rifles on the shelf before they get snapped up.

That way all across the state. I was a week in Lubbock & watched 2 go out while in "Shooter" there & another put on layaway that wos still on order & not in the store.

I was in Euless Guns and Ammo on Thursday afternoon last week. They sold an AR15, an AR10, and a Sig 556 while I was standing there. The next morning, I went back with my son, and one of the sales clerks snapped up the Sig P556 pistol they had on display for himself. The ARs and the Sigs were priced a bit more than they would have otherwise been, but it wasn't like they were twice as much, or anything like that. They also had 7 stripped DPMS lowers in stock. I bought two of them. A year ago, they were selling the same lower for $139.995. On Friday, it was $149.95. A $10 difference isn't too bad. I also bought the two lower receiver parts kits they had on the shelf ($69.95 each). Those seemed like pretty good prices, considering the situation.

Since my son and I had already bought 16" barreled upper assemblies a week before to mate to our varmint rifle lowers, we now have the makings of two new complete rifles on hand - two long heavy barreled varmint rifles, and two short barreled EBRs, instead of two lowers with switchable uppers. The strange part is that, I never really wanted to own 4 ARs before. Even now, I feel a bit ambivalent about it - partly because I don't have room in my safe for two new rifles. But given the situation, those extra two ARs may turn out to have been pretty good investments. I'm probably going to prop my shorty up in the corner of the bedroom, nearest my side of the bed. Then I can retire my "dresser top" pistol for home defense.

This may not be the right thread for this question, but I'm figuring if I ever wanted an AR15 that I should buy now? I don't know much (any) about them, but from what I gather you can buy them in sections? What's the minimum I can/should buy and still be able to assemble a functional gun later if the AWB is pushed through?

I would suggest buying 1 or 2 lowers now. That is the part considered the 'firearm'. The uppers and other parts can be bought later.

A couple of stripped lowers can be built up later and don't cost much (unless you go AR10).

It is not a bad idea to give some consideration to which upper you might want before purchasing a lower. The reason for this....is that the finish (color) of the two probably won't match... if not from the same manufacturer (if that is important to you).

Right now... stripped lowers can still be had for about $150.00, the better ones may be a bit higher.

Anyone mind pointing me in the right direction for good quality lowers? I don't mind paying for quality, but I'm not interested in paying for a name. Academy? A local gun shop? I'm in the League City/South Houston part of town if anyone knows the area.

Academy won't have them. You'll have to go to a gun store or a gun show to find them. Your large chain stores like Cabela's and Bass Pro don't carry them either. You can buy everything else you need for them - except the stripped lower - from any one of a number of online suppliers such as Midway, Del-Ton, or Galati International.
