Heh, you could always go back and "get both."
I did just that early last week. I had owned a 1911, but just last week I found a 2nd Generation G17 at a pawnshop for $300.

Personally I think of it more as a fun gun. 9mm is relatively cheap to throw down range, and its fun to fire off 17 rounds. Heh after I bought it I ordered an extra 17 round magazine and two of those long 33 round magazines. Having 100 rounds of ammo in 4 magazines is pretty cool.
That being said I do prefer the 1911 and it will be what I will carry.
