I am not giving anyone any information or signing any form. I will keep it simple as AEA said and buy from the Forum or FFL. The one buying the gun should be the one worrying if it is stolen

But it's the seller who may need to substantiate that he sold it!

Why? If it is used in a crime you are going to have to have something other than it was originally sold to you. In all my years of LE I never one time had to chase down but one pistol and it happened to belong to a police officer.

I just do a bill of sale, just as you would do with anything else of value. Thinking about where and who, two face to face sales (one purchase and one sale) were to forum members here and one was a well known forum member on another board (big time collector of a particular brand). All were consummated in a public parking lot. One after having dinner with person at a Chilis i think. Stick with folks here or people you know, and you'll be fine.

I did get a call from the DEA once on a gun i had sold. Just told them i sold it, over the phone, and never heard any more from them. That was several years ago. Apparenty it turned up in a house in south Texas in a drug raid. I call the guy i sold it too and he had resold it as well. Nothing came of it for him or me as we hadn't done anything wrong. Spooked me for about a day.

I'm thinking a couple of witnesses may be the way to go.
I know...the only real way to ensure a gun hasn't been
used in a crime is to buy one bran new from a gun shop.
Why are you so worried about paper trails?
They already exist if you are a functional member of society.
You are posting on an internet forum about your wanting to buy FTF to prevent trails because you are concerned that you might be buying stolen firearms.
You are wasting perfectly good paranoia that should be focused somewhere else.

I have a record book of all of my guns including rifles. You can get these from TSRA and they are great for keeping up with serial numbers in case of theft.
I will list each weapon in the book with info on my purchase (date, m/n, s/n, where I bought and from who). Then if and when I sell it, I just list it as sold. If I don't know the person I sold it to OR get that gut feeling, I may ask to see his DL OR to sign a bill of sale. But for the most part, I don't sell or buy from just anyone.
I think you can pretty well trust most on the forums. Either way though, you have no legal obligation to keep any records (at least not yet).

I wasn't talking about making it that obvious...I was just saying
maybe I should have a couple of witnesses in the truck, and leave
them in the truck when I get out and go meet the guy.
I'm not a CHP holder, so I hope the guy selling
wouldn't have a problem with that

Sure there are plenty of papertrails on me, but there aren't any in conjunction with buying & selling guns

Maybe I need to get me one of those books.
Is that from "Texas State Rifle Assoc"?
Yes, buying only from folks on the board
here is probably the best way to go, so
I'll cruise over to the for sale section
and see if they have anything I like.
I did a lot of shooting when I was growing
up, and I'd like to get back into it for
personal protection and for the fun of
target practice (always loved that)
Not looking to buy an arsenal, but would
like to have a few decent handguns
I just don't want any gun related papertrail
in case they ever sucessfully ban guns...
I'm not turning mine in cuz they won't
know I got 'em

Your statement on this board is incriminating enough to prove that you own firearms. No paper trail required. This stuff is forever on the internet. Welcoome to the brotherhood. We are all marked citizens.
Yahoo and Google bots were scanning this board as I posted this.

No one can conceal all their actvities, if a federal agency really wants to know and is willing to break the law. It's not worthwhile trying, IMO.

Well, my IP is hidden through a service that doesn't keep
records of IP activity through their system...so there
are no records to review.
Anyway, I know it's not going to be 100% but
why make it easy for them on somthing that's
none of their business anyway?
Unless I start doing criminal activity, nothing
I do is anybody's business...and I don't want
to know any one else's business either.
If people would simply respect one another,
it would make the world a much nicer place.

Tell that to lord master BO the most merciful after he and his orc minions are through with dealing with your personal business.

All they have to do is review credit card records of people who bought shooting supplies, the customer lists of mail-order places like Midway USA, the security video at stores that sell ammo. And there are probably people who will rat you out if asked. You can't hide.
