All of my belts, either dress or every day are 1.5" Don Hume. They look nice, can get in a varity of colors and they are stiff enough to support the largest of handguns. They are durable enough that I don't worry about them on the bike either.

Apostate is correct to a degree. A 1.5" leather gun belt will fit fewer than a third of my slacks.
Belt-looping is evidently less than an exact science with haberdashers.

Even if you take a ruler to the belt loops on your Dockers, Slates, Savannes, Polos, or Perry Ellis's, individual loops on a specific pair of pants may be sewn differently...and nobody said a 1.5" gun belt was the same thickness as a wimpy, single-layer belt.
If you wear off-the-rack dress slacks, I think you'll need at least one, good 1.25" gun belt.
If you use a 1.25" belt, be sure to get a holster or belt loop or adapter (depending on the holster maker's options) that is sized accordingly. Using belt slots wider than the belt will make the holster unstable and it won't hold its position well.

He did a fabulous 1.25" Ranger Style belt for me out of bridle leather and it passes through airport security metal detectors. Very good craftsmanship as well as polite in emails and following up to let you know about your order. If you use a 43" belt, I have a Ranger belt that I ordered from him that was too big. He offered to adjust it, but since it was my fault I just ordered a new one in the correct size. It hasn't been worn.
This is his Ranger style and what mine looks like.
