The problem here is whether the van driver was placed on the ground and handcuffed as well. If I were the CHL, someone had been trying to kill me and when the police get there, they put me on the ground, handcuffed and leave the other guy standing and unhandcuffed, I would be pretty upset. From the story, you can't really tell how the officer immediately treated the van driver.

I am glad that everything turned out okay and no one was injured. As far as being put on the ground and handcuffed, would it have turned out any different if the CHL with the gun, had put the gun down on the ground and raised his hands as soon as the LEO arrived? ...just a thought.

Considering how dynamic a situation like that is, I would have waited for orders from the LEO. If the BG is at close range and you set your gun down before the LEO has control of the situation, and irrational violent drunk could very well snatch your gun and turn it on you or the LEO. Considering the 911 call should inform the LEO of the situation, I'd stay in position and wait for the officer to tell me what to do.

Just my opinion, tho.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the thought of dropping my gun? How would the officer react when asked if I could lovingly place my baby on the ground?

Your right, I think he probably did the best thing concerning this situation, a drunk with a knife...and not to mention he had already tried to run over him.

I wear a full face helmet and if you wear it right and snug like you are suppose to there is not room for something to stick out of your ear. But I guess if its a half helmet that would be possible.

In town, the motorcyclist could have easily avoided the van and called in an aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, giving the cops cause for a stop, at which time they could have stiffed him for DWI. The motorcyclist compromised himself unnecessarily by pulling into the parking lot. Suppose the van driver had had a gun instead of a knife. While you may have no duty to retreat, it may be in your best interest to avoid a direct confrontation mano-a-mano.

I disagree. The van passed several times then slowed down making the motorcyclist pass. He was harrassing him. Lets say he would have tried to get away from the van and sped off through town AFTER he called the police whats to say he would not have been pulled over for speeding. Or maybe the police couldnt find the van then he gets away with everything. Is he supposed to follow this van...the same van that has tried to run him over several times? He pulled into the parking lot to get off the road and to where he could better protect himself. Lets say the man had a gun and not a knife. I am sure the CHLer would have drawn and shot immdiatley. He did the right thing and the best thing.

You can't always get (stay) behind. I posted previously about an experience I had ~20 years ago where I (on a motorcycle) had a nutcase (in a car) trying to get me. I got him in front of me (this on I-35 south of San Antonio at night) and got a bus in between us and felt relatively safe. The bus then slowed down to about 25 mph and finally pulled into the left lane and went around... the nutcase who was in front of him slowed to that speed. He kept slowing, as did I, until he pulled to the shoulder and stopped. I pulled to the shoulder about 30 yards behind him and stopped as well. It was a stalemate and I realized I couldn't stay there all night, so I finally gassed it hard and went by him and the insane chase continued.

Don't underestimate the motivation level of nutcases.

Still, the motorcyclist would have made it safer for himself if he had avoided the confrontation. I am selfishly thankful that he had the confrontation and got this guy off the road, but there are many ways it could have gone terribly wrong for him. I think being cuffed is reasonable in this situation, but I don't which guy I would cuff first. Great risk for the officer that whoever you cuff 2nd might take a swipe at you while you cuff the other one.
