Fixed it for ya!
note from the article she did have her doors locked she opened the door to check on a noise outside. Install a peephole, security camera system, etc. The door was unlocked by her, an alarm would not have been activated, now a shotgun could have been in her hands but i can't reliably hold a shotgun at the ready and open the door. So check through a window, peephole, security camera what is out there first.

My comment about the burglar alarm and locked doors was attached to another incident where a robber entered a house while the resident was asleep.
I agree with you that opening a door in the presence of a potential criminal is risky, especially for elderly women who are unarmed and alone.
