Fangs,

I suspect that you are using some kind of metal duck billed mags and are experiencing the narrow lip problem. I've had the same problem with a couple of the cheap metal mags. I switched to Tapco polymer mags with metal bottoms and have had zero problems since. They seat properly, insert easily, feed reliably, and hold the slide back when empty. The only feature that some find annoying is that the bolt must be back to remove/insert the magazine. If you haven't tried one of the Tapco mags, I would recommend that you give one a try before you buy any more metal mags.

As to your second question regarding the use of AK mags in an SKS, I've never tried it. I would imagine that since there is nothing holding the front of the mag in place without the duck bill, it would likely fall out quite easily. I'm amazed it works at all.

I looked at one of the SKS forums I have bookmarked and saved a link to some information that includes identification of SKS models that can use AK mags. You might want to check out the site. I'll bet it will answer at least a few of your questions.
