Know your breed of dog before doing this. I have read documented stories of people raising weimaraner pups with cats their entire lives. . . then one day around 2-3 years old, the weim hits maturity and kills the cat. Even if they appear to be getting along, some dogs have strong instincts and could view cats as varmints to be hunted. I know my weim could not cohabitate with another species. . . well, maybe horses or cattle, but my HOA won't allow me to try.

I have an English Bull dog and a Pit Bull Terrier AND two house cats. The bulldog could care less about anything other than dinner time, and the Pit Bull is in a constant power struggle with one of the cats. As far as protection the Pit Bull will bark her heart out at the smallest noise in the night. But she would only bite someone if my girlfriend aka her owner was in trouble. Firearm wise in my house I have a nightstand pistol, a loaded shotgun inside the bedroom door, and another pistol hidden in the living room. Doors stay locked at ALL times home or not.
