NBC evening news described the weapons as 2 assualt rifles ("SKS", "Bushmaster") "pump-shotgun" , and a 38? pistol.
and 30round mags clipped/taped together.

I noticed on the local news this morning a picture of a guy hanging some sort of tarp over a damaged portion of some building there, and right on his hip (no law enforcement credential visible) was a nice holstered semi-auto...

Not that that would do any good (at this point), but I guess it was a statement he was trying to make or something...

Apparently someone who was killed, was trying to intervene (against the gunman), whether they were armed or not has yet to be revealed to the public...

It will be interesting to see if that is the case...I believe this is something we need to investigate ourselves and post what we find out about that as soon as possible...

Mrs. Oldgringo's brother is a LEO in a BHM suburb. He tells us a CHL in Alabama requires a $10 check to the sherrif. If so, everybody should be packing. If the shooter went down the street shooting as reported on ABC News this evening, why wasn't there any return fire?

I agree with stevie_d, something's missing in this story. This happened in 'get a rope' country.

Well, let's see; in about 10-15 seconds I could be standing on my porch with a .357 snub. If I take the time to do something sensible, like put on shoes , grab a rifle, and go out the back door to be discreet about it, that's time for anybody on the street to be well past the house. Not out of rifle range, but far enough that I'd be hard pressed to hit a moving target while in the middle of an adrenaline dump and having to verify (through the scope, so potentially drawing fire to myself from others trying to do the same thing) that that's the BG and not someone else coming out after him.

No - I'm trying to imply that 1) gun shows would be a bad example because most of them are posted, so that doesn't really prove glocklvr's point. . . in fact, it could be used by the anti's for their side. They could at least ask why, if we're so sure that CHLers are responsible, we disarm them when we're all in the same room looking at guns and ammo. They could certainly claim that they are posted (creating a defenseless victim zone) and that there hasn't been a mass shooting yet. 2) I'm trying to imply that maybe, just maybe, the people running and in the end benefiting greatly from these gun shows don't buy into our philosophies. 3) I'm wondering why there hasn't been an organized movement to protest, boycott, or otherwise challenge these policies.

CHLers are quick to kick and scream whenever we see a new business posted, but thousands of us silently herd ourselves into the candy store and willingly disarm before entering. . . . We're largely sitting ducks if somebody went nuts in there - at least as long as it took the police at the front door to get through the crowd (assuming they're not targeted first - sitting there in folding chairs) or as long as it takes a dealer to unlock a firearm, load a magazine, and prep the weapon (assuming they're not an immediate target). The police aren't watching as we walk from the parking lot/garage to the door at the ones I've been to, either.

I'm sure a nutcase would be overwhelmed by physical power of the masses and crushed by the crowd, but they wouldn't be shot, and people would probably die before the crowd crushed them - assuming people didn't flee and crush each other at the doors.

Basically, I'm fed up with gun shows posting.

I think if something went down at a gun show, at least 100 loaded weapons would be in hand within seconds, regardless of the 30.06 posting or other rules.

The observation that people at shooting ranges don't shoot each other is more relevant. There you have loaded weapons in close proximity, and not everyone is friendly. Sometimes people at ranges do very irritating things.

This happened during the day when folks were out on the street, I think. You may be right, the shooter could have been past by the time anybody/everybody realized what was happening. Everybody wins on Monday morning and I wasn't even in the game.
