Hmm, I guess the Big Thicket starts east of Jacksonville, Tx. (I have been to Zavalla!)

My guess would be that teeth are optional in the Big Thicket?

When Algore was running for POTUS there was a bumper sticker :

"I'd rather be a fence post in Texas than the KING of Tennessee"

While I certainly enjoyed the bumper sticker, I have met some really nice folks from Tennessee...but they didn't vote for Algore, either.

Davey Crockett DID have a good parting line. One of my daughters gave me a cap sporting that saying and I have it on a small sign at the ranch.

Yeah, but you are FROM Tennessee, he was still there. That could explain the difference.

I traveled around the country a couple of years ago, giving short training sessions on new voting machines and associated equipment. Even though I grew up in upstate NY, and spent six years in IL on my way home to TX, I have acquired a little TX twang. The only people who could peg me for not having grown up here were already here.

I taught several classes in TN, Paris, Savannah, Byrdstown (which has FOUR Main Streets) and a couple of others, and had an absolute blast, well there was that time when my GPS showed a bridge across the Tennessee River at Saltillo, and there was none, but otherwise the people were universally nice and welcoming no matter what accent I used when teaching my classes.

Edited to add, I also really enjoyed having lunch at a diner in Buford Pusser's home town in McNairy County, TN.

I can't really say the same for Nebraska.

I'm a 5th generation Texan, and I love the folks from Tennessee (except Al Gore). They helped us out with that little Mexico problem in 1836, don't ya'll remember??

There is lots to like about Tennessee, Remember the rejected Al Gore at the ballot box, They are fighting hard for gun rights, and succeeding in forwarding the RKBA, They have given us great men like Davy Crockett, Glenn Reynolds, and Fred Thompson. Tennessee is quite beautiful, and makes good whiskey. I've always found the folks quite charming and hospitable. Its the land that gave us Elvis, Dolly, and Reba. along with the Grand Old Opry.

Now we are all dancing around about quoting a statement that had a lot to do with the creation of Texas as an independent state. If I am going to get tossed off the board for quoting Davy Crockett and using a word that we have all heard and heard in church so be it.

I happened to use the same quote 20 years, While I was living in a state ruined by Michael Dukakis who called it a miracle. I've never looked back. I even have the saying framed on my wall.

It has been my experience over the past 3 score years that even yankees don't like yankees.

I see a lot of North-easterners where I work, either transplants or co-ops. There are a few universal truths when it comes to them:
1. They are always impress with the wide open spaces of the south
2. They are astounded that anyone would drive more than 20miles to/from work or that a "quick" trip to the store could be a 10 mile commute (an obvious result of #1)
3. They wonder why there are so many roads named "Frontage" and often ask if this "Frontage guy" helped with the "Whole Alamo thing"
4. They believe you when you tell them the access roads that run along the highway were built to keep the drunks off the main lanes
5. They have no understanding of the term "Texas Pride" because state pride evidently doesn't exist up there

My idea of a good time is perpetuating the Texan stereotype to MIT or Ivy League Co-ops...the fun lasts all summer long
