Sorry that took so long to reply to this.

Read almost everything out of a book, stuttered on a lot of what he was reading, the test (which is stupid anyway) he gave us the answers to "Write 1 to whatevernumberitwas down on a peice of paper. Ok A, C, A, A, etc" on the TR-100 he had everyone right down SA for the type of license and I think one of us in the class wanted to qual with a revolver. and he had everyone write down "pass" on the tr-100 instead of grading the targets and the what not.

That sounds less like a general 'bad instructor', and more like an instructor that should be reported for violations of the rules & laws regarding CHL Classes & Testing!

Perhaps another instructor can comment as to exactly how against the rules/laws that is, and what you should do about it.

:iagree: Sounds like he is more interested in making a quick buck than actually correctly train people. Not good :waiting:

The shooting grade is "pass/fail" That goes on the TR-100. It is not acceptible to give the answers to the test while the test is being taken. The test is not very difficult. (my daughter took it at 12 years old and passed without reading anything) The state allows instructors to operate pretty much without interference, because as a whole, CHL instructors have taken their responsibility seriously. (as have CHL holders) The program is a success and it is important that we all follow the rules. I know I am preaching to the choir because the people on this forum WANT to do the right thing. Someone will write this guy up and the state will put a "mole" in his class. He could lose his instructor and CHL license.

But writing pass on the tr-100 and have everything signed before you even shoot?

We need to report instructors like that. Unless you want them featured on Dateline NBC and the VPC website.

Actually, I pre-print all my TR-100s with "PASS" for both the shooting and written test. If you don't pass, you don't get a TR-100. Why would you need one that says "FAIL" on it? Are you going to send that in to DPS?

I never have understood why we need to put pass or fail on them. Obviously, if you don't pass, you don't get a certificate.

Ok Cross, how about writing pass on them, then driving to the range that you're shooting on and keeping the TR-100 in your car (with the word pass on it) while you shoot?

The instructor still has to sign it, and give you, or put his information on it. A Certificate with just 'pass' written on it is worthless.

... Unless he did do the above, sign it, and give it to you before you even took the test... that's different.

That would be pretty much how we handle it. If you pass, we sign it and give it to you. If you don't, we schedule another range session for you. If you can't pass in 3 tries, then we destroy the TR-100.

I re-read what I said and what you said, I never mentioned it was signed and sitting in our cars before we went to the range. He signed and filled out everything we needed while we were in the classroom including the tr-100 after the classroom portion we put everythign in our cars, including our signed tr-100 and drove our cars to the range. There we only got out our firearms and bullets from the car and shot in groups of two. As soon as we were done shooting (I was in the first group) we left and went home. I technically could have never even went to the range for the shooting portion because I had everythign I needed before then. Sorry for not being good at explaining :smash:

This thread has sort of gone another direction, but may I toss in my endorsement for Hotwell's. My wife and I went there, and had a very positive experience. She wasn't excited about the prospect of most of the day spent there, but it was very well done, and entertaining as well as informative.

They walked us through everything, fingerprints, paperwork, qualification, etc.

And yes, snacks, drinks and lunch was included.
