My dad is wanting to buy a gun for me and is trying to find a local seller outlet for a good used on (he lives in Missouri). I am happy with the weapons that I have now, but when he mentioned that he wants to get me one, I am not going to turn it down  .

He is a vietnam vet and the ONLY gun that he will buy...and buy for me is a 1911 from that era....basically the same service revolver he had. I have checked out some pics of the 1911 and I think they look awesome. I know that once I get it, it will become my conceal weapon. Aside from them lookin' "purty", I dont know a lot about them. I do plan on hitting the m1911.org and 1911forum.com sites and start learning what I can about them, but wanted to find out a few things:

1) How big is a 1911 from the vietnam era? This will be my primary carry weapon and I am wondering if will be more difficult to carry. I current daily carry a C9 Hi-point 6.75 length (3.75 barrel) and is comparable in size as a glock 19.

2)I keep seeing 7+1 and 8+1, My hi-point is a 8+1 and I carry condition one. I was wondering if they have double stack clip

3) Regarding carry, is it a SA/DA and how do people handle the cocked part? I dont know what I think about having it cocked and then doing a draw....of course I never thought I would carry with a round in the pipe and look at me now

1911 Service Revolver?
I knew it as soon as I wrote it someone would have to say something about "revolver". Its a bit o' slang to call it a service "revolver".

I thought that there was another weapon out there that I knew nothing about.

1911 are single stack (Some Paras are double stack). You can get 7+1, 8+1, 10+1 etc. mags for them. He will most likely get you something like the Springfield Armory GI and or Mil-Spec.

Where in MO is he?

karl, I did the same thing when I first discovered this forum. Mr. Cotton can fix the problem. E-mail him.

I would suggest every 1911 afficianado needs to own

An unaltered blues Colt series 70 5"
A Springfield Armory Mil-Spec or loaded. 5" stainless
A Kimber or SA 3" due-tone

St Charles/St Peters (east side of the state). He is obviously wanting to go used and has been looking through the paper each day (and various magazines) that have guns in them, but he says so far there has been nothing in the 1911 world.

From what I have seen (and I have never handled a 1911) is that they are "thin", which I would love given that I IWB and the thinner the gun the better. I've had to lose a lot of weight in order to IWB my hi-point and stay in my pant size. Better health and all that wouldnt get me to lose weight, but to be able to effective conceal my gun, I am hitting the treadmill "rlol"

I am guessing he is also tapping some of the guys at the various local vfw's that he is a member of to get a bead...but he just says that everyone is being very close lipped about weapons given the administration that we are in (regardless of if its true or not).

As far as I know...

1) All 1911s that have been used in service are 5" barrels...

2) Single stack

3) SAO carried cocked and locked. I was wary about doing this as well but I've had some recommendations to do so, if you need it and don't have the time to ram the slide back you're in deep doo-doo.

If you have a SAO with an inertial firing pin, you can carry hammer down on a round. (Condition 2?)
I prefer that, so I guess I'm not a True Believer

To all 1911 fans:
Can someone lay out what the various 1911 model names mean?

Commander/Officer/Service/Tactical/other?

Do some of these names denote a 3" barrel, a 4" barrel, the length of
the grip, or some other characteristics?

Thanks in advance.

Govt Model 1911 is 5" (this was issue - service weapon)
Combat Commander 4.25"
I think there was also an Officers model that had an even shorter barrel (3.75" or 4" ??)

2)I keep seeing 7+1 and 8+1, My hi-point is a 8+1 and I carry condition one. I was wondering if they have double stack clip
Standard stack is 7+1
Of course you can buy extended mags if you choose (Cabella's has a 10+1)

3) Regarding carry, is it a SA/DA and how do people handle the cocked part? I dont know what I think about having it cocked and then doing a draw....of course I never thought I would carry with a round in the pipe and look at me now
1911 are SA and designed to be carried "cocked and locked"
the safety has to be off and the weapon gripped (to disengage the grip safety) to be fired
gotta remember...it was designed for the safe use by kids who have never held a handgun
and under the stress of combat...but don't think for a minute that you can't shoot a huge whole
in your foot....
Basically since the inception in 1911 there have been only two models: M1911 and M1911A1
http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=181604 Check out the minor differences. Its very easy to tell the two models apart.

Look for a Series 70 Colt Govt Model. Good luck though. Most people who own those will not part with them. Read the 1911Forum. It has a lot of good info and aha's.

I am sure there is more to tell you just can't come up with anything else (tired)! Several guys on the forum are aficionados of 1911...Tam, longtooth,xtremeduty45, and more....

Help me out guys....
