Another in the Houston area who would be happy to take you to the range on a weekend. Pistols - 9mm & .45ACP, revolvers .38 special and .357 mag.

And if it is the second or third Sunday, let me know and I will bring extra rifle ammo so you can shoot an AR-15, after the match.

One additional thing to keep in mind...if you rent a gun at the range, they will probably require that you purchase their ammo (even if you have factory ammo). While you are going to need ammo regardless, the ranges rarely have good prices.

Welcome to Texas and this forum, Dudley. I hope you enjoy your visit.

With regard to ammo, it's possible go to a sporting goods store and buy handgun ammunition without an ID, if you appear to be over 21 years of age.

However, I recommend not doing it. It is a federal offense for a non-immigrant alien to receive or possess ammunition, according to 18 USC 922(d)(5).

There is an exception in the law that allows a non-immigrant alien to hunt or shoot, but it is limited to the time and place where the activity is occurring.

You get a few more breaks if you have a state-issued hunting license. I don't know if you're going to be here long enough to bother.

I don't make the rules. I don't have to like the rules. But them's the rules.

If you take up one of the invitations that you have received, you can avoid any problems with IDs, expensive range rentals, and surly attendants.

If you bring your own gun, you shoot your own ammo. If you rent their gun, many will require you to use their ammo. I disagree with this policy as long as factory ammo is used (I can understand not wanting people to shoot their own reloads), but they're not my guns so....

If you get to Dallas, I work close to DFW Gun Range. You could rent one of their guns (but you must buy their ammo to shoot through it) or I have a .45 SA and a .380 SA that you would be welcome to shoot.

Here is one place that I shoot at in Houston that rents pistols http://www.gunrangehouston.com/Home.html. You would have to contact them for their policies and rates, I don't know what they are since I bring my own gun there. I shoot at a number of other ranges in the Houston area also, but I don't think the other ones rent guns. If you want someone to go shooting with in Houston on weekends, contact me. I usually go shooting on the weekend would be willing to take you to a range.

It depends where you go. Currently Reds in Austin requires a US drivers license to rent a gun, but if you have a US citizen/rent it then there's no problem. They claim this is change in US law; it never used to be a requirement - a Canadian driver's license used to be fine.

'course if you were hunting in Texas and held a non-resident Texas hunting license, it would be perfectly legal for you to bring firearms from Canada, buy ammo here and open carry a handgun while hunting. It doesn't have to make sense - its gov't policy :-)


Oh, and Red's does require you to use their ammo in their rental guns.

If you find yourself in Galveston county, give me a shout. We can go punch holes in paper at Texas City, I even gots some 380 ammunition (I deliberately kept the caliber secret just in case I make my home a target.)

Isn't Canada in North Texas somewhere? Just north of Wyoming County?
