The school policy mentioned no storage on university "premise," but notice they didn't say "grounds." So as long as you don't store your handgun in a dorm or academic building, it sounds like you're free and clear, because premise is clearly defined by Texas law as excluding parking lots and parking garages. IANAL. YMMV.

I've talked to our police chief before about weapons and he gave me the impression that you would take the ride if caught with a weapon. No they don't do random searches, but weird things happen.

When I first got my license, I had left my gun in my vehicle while I was in class and after I got out of class there was one of the campus officers waiting for me. She walked with me out to my truck and never said what it was that I had done, so here I am thinking that I am about to become a test case for having a weapon on campus and she is going to ask for id, see my chl and ask about my gun! I was then taken to the campus police office and asked some questions, turns out some guy used my parking pass number to fraudulenty create his own, and one day when the parking pass was checked out and his plates didn't match, they got suspicious and thought I gave him my number to use. Like I said, weird things happen where you can be made, or a vehicle accident on campus, or some other altercation where you are asked for id.

So I did a little searching on my school's website and our police chief was interviewed this past april when campus carry was being introduced in the legislature and these were his elitist opinions:

“I do not believe that campus member’s safety will be increased by having guns in the hands of novice or recreational shooters,” said Officer Sam Martinez, Chief of Campus Police at TAMUG, who gave his opinion as both a parent and as an offi cer of the law.

While many of our students are no doubt very skilled with firearms, I do believe that we could see more accidents and more unintentional consequences just by the increased incidents of gun handling, cleaning, transportation, storage or lack of proper storage and the ready availability of guns during times of stress.”

There is also the effect on officer safety and their ability to quickly respond. “How are police officers (ours and outside agencies coming to help) going to sort out who the real gunman is during an active shooter situation if everyone is running around with guns in their hands?” says Martinez. “They can’t, everyone will be treated as a threat until it is determined otherwise. This scenario is one of the scariest I can imagine and you can imagine how much this would slow down the response to the real gunman.”

Another aspect is increased crime. Books, laptops, book bags, notebooks, and a number of other personal items are stolen every year at campuses. This leaves open the very real possibility that a weapon could be stolen as well, meaning that it could end up in the hands of someone who was unlicensed or worse, someone who wished to use it against another person on campus.

Still another possible effect is one of psychological trauma. “The bill is aimed at a self defense response from campus members at ground zero during an active shooter situation,” says Martinez. “But asking a poorly trained student or a staff member to make a decision to hunt down a homicidal person and stop him/her with a gun is a lot to ask, especially if the situation is not in self defense. And, what if the would-be rescuer shot an innocent bystander by mistake, what kind of trauma would that person suffer? What if the person chose not to place him or herself in peril and suffered from the effects of that decision afterwards?”

Frustrating to say the least.

You talked to school officials? Well, if they know who you are, you may be on their radar. Be discreet.

It's been a long time since I was in college, but without getting too specific, I was never a stickler for following rules that didn't have the force of law behind them.

And I have excellent reason to believe that at my campus - which was surrounded on three sides by very bad areas - not everyone was altogether religious about observing the laws regarding weapons, either . . . particularly some of the female students. (Discreet, yes . . . very, very discreet.)

academia is the lowest form of life in this country. I go to TCU, most of my profs are conservative, but all of the administration are hard core leftists. My thing is that I keep it locked in the lower armrest. They will need a warrant to get to that, and they can't get a warrant to search my car for guns (specific items being searched for must be listed on the warrant) because it is not illegal to have a gun in the parking lot of a college campus, it is only against their "student code of conduct".

If TCU ever tries to kick me out for it, I have no problem with hiring a lawyer, and getting the whole thing turned on its ear. I would love nothing more than turning this whole apple cart over. There is no reason that I cannot carry my legally licensed handgun anywhere a police officer can.
