Boy isn't that the truth. I was stubborn about numbering my mags for a long time....one of those things I had to learn the hard way.

+1 I got a little 5"x7" spiral-bound notebook with rigid covers at some conference or other a few years ago, and that's what I use: compact and easy to write on. I don't handload, and I don't shoot at great distances very often (no "sniper's" log book), so I never have kept track of ammo or loads. But if for no other reason than to be proactive in changing out springs, I think keeping a reasonably accurate idea of round count is a good idea.

I use a Dremel to put my initials and a number on each magazine, though I've never kept any record of round-count per mag. I think that would be pretty difficult to do when attending, for example, a high round-count class. But it's something to think about. I started doing it so that if I had repeat failures, I might be able to trace it back to a particular mag; and also to distinguish mine from all the others like it lying on the ground after strings with multiple moving shooters reloading multiple times. I lost a couple of Glock mags that way once.

:iagree: +1 for the Excel spreadsheet.

I have a Summary page with a Stockpile count and how many rounds through each gun and a worksheet for each gun, with when, how many, what type and where. It also has a cleaning history on the worksheet. It was quick and easy to set up.

Slightly OCD? Maybe, but it is fun and it combines two passions at once...puters and poppers.

I will gladly give a copy of the layout to anyone that wants it. :thumbs2:
