Do what I did; SWMBO has a day-glo green (her favorite color) Mini-Griptilian that I gave her for her birthday a couple of years ago, partly as an excuse to order my fullsize black Griptilian.
Gotta hand it to Benchmade on that one, too. Both are knives have been through a lot, and both will still take and keep a scary edge in just a few minutes with the Gatco sharpener. I've still got the CRKT and the Kershaw that I had before I got my Benchmade, but they're in the cars as backups now, since neither of them has quite the same overall quality.
I'm hard on knives, (I once ruined a Cold Steel Large Gunsite Tanto by whittling bois d'arc) so I'm picky about quality. Anything I can get for $30 or less tends to be ruined within a week. Two years in my pocket (to its credit, the Cold Steel was going into its third year when it died) is a real indicator of quality.

I bought my wife a Spyderco Tasman Salt for mother's day. She was very happy and carries it every day.

I'm pretty tough on knives as well. I always had a little pocket knife since I was a kid. I upgraded to a bigger clip knife when I went through EMS and was on the ambulance. Great for seatbelts. I've gone through countless Gerbers, a few S&W's, and one Benchmade. The Benchmade got lost in the mail when I sent it back for a factory repair. Scale broke and they said they'd replace it for free. Never came home. Benchmade showed they'd sent it back, but UPS never delivered, and couldn't track it down. I didn't fight, and I should have. Stupid of me. Now I've got an Emerson 2002 Commander with wave feature. 3 years old and I have no intention of replacing it anytime soon. It's hands down the best knife I've ever owned. I feel naked without it.

I've got e CRKT MIL M16 and I put it through hell - its my second one. First one was replaced after over a year being carried on my person daily, even on my Abrams tank. Never skipped a beat before it failed and was replaced for free when it did(the deployment posts on the blade came loose).
Only have to sharpen it every few months, only b/c I like to split hairs with it.
