This issue is a mystery to me, and no one on this forum or elsewhere has helped solve it.

If you go to a physician and ask if he will sign off on your ability to carry a concealed weapon, the physician has nothing to lose by saying No, and a lot of risk if he says Yes and you turn out to be a nut job (I'm not implying that you are).

However, police agencies have some kind of mental health professionals who examine job applicants. Those psychiatrists or whatever they are would be ideal for a CHL who has to get a sign-off. Unfortunately, I have no clue who they are or how to find them.

Yep, Even though the third paper in this case does state the law of liability, which says that they are not liable at all for their opinion or recommendation. Which negates the whole thing anyways.

How do i scan these papers (minus my name/ssn of course) and post them for all to see? A good idea?

What are you referring to as "the third paper"?

If you have a scanner and a PC that was made in the last 10 years, you have the software that you need. The software that comes with Windows is primitive but usable.

The easiest solution is to make photocopies of what you want to scan, cross out the confidential information on paper with a felt-tip pen, and scan that copy.

Firstly congratulations on cleaning out your life and keep up the good work.

Given that you don't have a doctor that you go to very often, how easy would it be to find a pro gun doctor in your area and go to them? (preferably a CHL friendly one too)

I know from posts on here that such people exist so maybe that would be a start?

I know it is expensive but maybe you could contact a pro gun attorney and seek some advice from them too?

Good luck, hang on in there, and definately keep up the good work with the rehab. :thumbs2:

Thanks for posting these forms. I was completely unaware of this stuff, including HSC 12.098.

Oh, and if you want a good attorney in Galveston County, I am acquainted with one named Charles L. Cotton.

The only other thing I can say at this point is good luck.

All five pages up!

Thanks Kevin, I will. Finding a pro gun doctor, well how do you ask them?

I need to find those posts! I will hang in there!

But for now I'm going to bed! Friday the 13th has sucked. Got a cold, and got to deal with this stuff.

Call your area gun clubs. Tell them you're trying to find a doctor or medical professional who is gun friendly, and ask if they can refer you to any of their members who fit that bill.

Just my view as a therapist. This isn't a pro-gun thing and if you lean on that aspect you might come off as a nut job. (Pardon my technical lingo) You don't want your clean and sober period to be defined as anything else.

You need someone to assess your current level of functioning. You have a history but are currently clean. The state needs a lisenced doc to do the evaluation and sign off. The evaluation is needed for your CHL but is not dependent on the doctor's personal views of anything except your current level of functioning.

Yes, its possible that someone can press their opinion by saying yes/no unrelated to your current life but I hope the majority of doctors are more ethical than that.

I hope your right about the ethical part.

Well I won't know what they write on it anyways, The doctor is supposed to fill out the paperwork and mail it. I'll start checking into a doctor next week when I get back in town.

Made an appointment with a psychiatrist for next Wednesday.

Also got a letter in the mail from DPS dated the 5th of November, saying that Due to a "self reported" medical or substance abuse problem we have forwarded your case to the MAB.

Went to see the doc today, and it went well. He didn't even jump out of his chair when i told him i was trying to get a concealed handgun license!

We talked for about 45 mins and then he asked if he could call my wife to corroborate what i told him. I said yes and gave him the number, he called her on speaker phone and asked her some questions, including if she was ok with me carrying a "pistol" and she answered excellently! So he signed off on all the papers, shook my hand and gave me bussiness card, said to give him a call if i had any trouble with it.

Thanks, for the support, this has been a good learning experience for me. Thanks to those who have privately helped me with this situation as well!

Now the wait is on again!
