Robberies at UT Arlington this month

Out of curiousity I looked up FBI's 2008 crime statistics on Texas universities and colleges. Looks like University of Houston (central campus) takes top honors with 19 reported violent crimes. Right on its heels is UTA with 18. All other campuses reported 11 or less. Seems like per student crime rates are a bit higher in general at these locations as well. I looked at 2006 and 2007 as well. Seems they weren't as bad.

I'd be interested to see how these numbers compare to the local off-campus reported violent crime-rates.

Well, I know there was a "national protest" of this sort last year, courtesy of concealedcampus.org (but I could totally be wrong since I can't seem to find the info anymore) so I was planning on organizing it around the time the big one is held. I'll keep you updated and will likely post about it. ;)

Drewthetexan - I also looked up the numbers. Some campuses look like scary places to go to school, much less live. But there aren't weapons allowed so I can't imagine why crime rate is so high...

On campus assault.
November 25, 12:10 am:
"Victim was walking in the parking lot and talking on his cell phone when he was struck from behind and then punched in the face. The victim fought back and the suspects ran away. The suspects did not say or demand anything from the suspect."

That makes 4 on campus this month, which is probably about as much or more than most campuses will report all year. I'm assuming the guy wasn't just assaulted for giggles. Wish I had more details.

Don't bet on the official statistics to be real honest from college campus crime reports. The administration doesn't particularly want it to appear to be anymore dangerous than at your parents house. I would be willing to bet UT and actually exceed UTA and U of H in violent episodes. I seem to recall several years ago seeing a report on under reporting crime stats on campus. Do a search o under reporting cres on college campus'.

I've kind of gotten that impression from a couple of things I've read lately.

The startle-gram has a short blurb on the robberies.
The Shorthorn, the school paper, also has a story on this.
