Hmmmmmmm. Maybe I've been too out of touch lately. I gave up hog hunting at Lake Grapevine because it was sooooooo restrictive. Last I knew, it was archery only and no baiting allowed. And some really tough places to get to .... ' Might just have to drive down to their office and get the current scoop.

I have a 1200 fps Gamo Whisper Deluxe. The question, is it allowed as means for hunting on grapevine lake hunting grounds?

My .223 AR does the trick. Lots of rounds and low recoil. Usually when hit they will stop running, although a quick follow up shot is usually needed to dispatch them. My dad once tool out 11 hogs just before dark with an old winchester pump and 3in buckshot so I'd say that's pretty lethal as well. He did have an open field to chase them in though...

I'm building a 6.8 SPC AR just for this purpose.

chabouk,
The air rifle they took the pig with shot 1600 f.p.s. - that's pretty fast for an air rifle.
I've got an RWS that shoots 1000 f.p.s. with a .177 cal pellet.
It''ll shoot completely through a squirrel, but I wouldn't try it on a pig.
Well, maybe a piglet...

I use a AR style rifle with .223 for the simple reason I want them to run into the brush and die there and not out where I hunt deer. I have dropped them with the round but it isn't as easy as using a larger caliber like 30-06 or .308. 30-30 is a good round for up to 150 yards for me. Basically, like anything else, it is shot placement. I wouldn't use a pistol or shotgun unless I was close and out of the hogs reach.
Hog hunting is fun and yes we need more people hunting them year round.

I'm sure you know this, but be sure you get an SPC II chamber. Lets you use the "military" loads from Silver State Armory. Quite a bit more powerful than the original 6.8. Here is some good info:

You ought to be able to reach the lake from Euless where you are with that FAL. Just crank in a little elevation and some left windage. Of course, you'll need a forward observer.

My favorite hunting rifle for hogs is a Remington 700 in .223. It is a bit smaller a round than what would be optimum, but the rifle is so darn accurate, that I can get away with it. It is definitely time to get out in the field and pick up some game.

Well, I drove down to the Grapevine Corps office and got "the scoop". Despite the hype in the link and wishfull thinking in this thread, it's STILL archery only on the Grapevine Lake Corps property for both deer (during season) and feral hog year round. The ranger in the office referred me to their web site for more details. I went ahead and got the permit while there. But don't know how much I will go. Baiting not allowed. And last time I was there, it was extremely thick cover - great for hogs, but real tough on humans trying to get thru it quietly with a bow.

I do not have a bow. So, the GV lake is out of the question for me. I just came back from checking and adjusting the zero of my Tikka T3 Lite SS. After, I added the limbsaver recoil pad the pain is gone after 30 rd still no pain whatsoever. That thing works! Also, I added the limbsaver de-resonator, and my group are less than 1" on some goups, couple hits at 100 yrd are touching. It seems the the rubber donut does work too.
