Holy Moly!
Do kabooms happen all that often? I have so far used only factory made ammunition, so that probably helps reduce the odds some. I just don't want my XDm to look like that. OUCH!

Original thread said the shooter was part of Dillion Precision team, so that tells me about a 95% probability of reloads ...

reading the links and the links links its pretty clear that reloads were at fault.

I was at a gun this weekend and a husband was showing his wife how to shoot. She never took her finger off of the trigger. Even when talking to her husband. She always had the muzzle pointed down range. But it make me uneasy with people new at the range. Especialy ones that think they know what they are doing.

The pictures that show the cartridge base in the chamber are interesting. The brass is not just blown out at 6 o'clock (as is typical for a out of battery detonation) but badly mashed up and around...the extraction groove appears all but gone and there is a LOT of vaporized and redeposited brass in the feed ramp.
My inexpert opinion: Overpressure round. That can be from a obstructed barrel or an overcharged cartridge, but it is not classic for a 'simple' out of battery firing.
IMO the pistol contained it pretty well actually. The barrel isn't split, and the slide is reasonably intact. The venting sent a good bit of gas into the mag well and it would be nice to have it contain/dump the mag out the bottom without blowing out the side...but overall a pretty good outcome to a severe abuse situation.
Good to hear that the shooter is reasonably intact afterwards in any case.

I reload that is why I always use a case cage for every bullet I reload.

And also a good chance that the gun had >10K rounds through it, and maybe several times that.
