but you have to admit, the look that some of these officers would have would be priceless.
I had a M1928A1 in my armory aboard ship in the Navy. With the buttstock off it fit under my jacket quite well, with a 30 round magazine yet.

I know the military rules are different but in civilian life would it be a rifle or AOW with the butstock off?

I believe under the National Firearms Act, it would be a machine gun. This trumps all other NFA categories. M1928A1 is a Thompson submachine gun. If for some reason it was semi, then under NFA it would be a short barreled rifle (SBR) and require a $200 stamp. This would be the case with stock on or off as the definition is based on barrel length <16".
