I forgot to post last night, but the range fee for non-members will be $12/hour with no upcharge for multiple guns.

Looks like I'll continue to use PSC unless the weather is just too hot or too rainy.

I'd be very interested in knowing who'd be willing to pay those prices.

Anyone here?

Do they serve canapes or finger sandwiches?

Yes, I'm being a smart aleck, but I can't imagine anyone willing to pay such prices or is this set up to create a very private club for those who find exclusive clubs their cup of tea?

In all seriousness, when you consider some of the side benefits, the prices aren't as bad (e.g., free class, initial CHL, free gun cleanings, etc.) as they seem but I still think they are pretty ridiculous. These guys are betting on this place being so popular that other intangibles (i.e., jump to the front of the line) are going to be valuable to those who can afford to, and are willing to pay what I consider to be exorbitant prices.

Red's Indoor Gun Range in Austin and Pflugerville is $14/hr for non-members and $700 (IIRC) for a membership. They seem to have plenty of business and judging from the vehicles in the parking lot, it's from a broad base of the population.

In my case, it's much closer than any of the other ranges available to me and I'm just not willing to drive an extra 45 minutes each way. Also, if I factor in the cost of the extra drive, it actually makes it pretty cost effective. I must admit that I can't quite manage to belly up for the membership price though.

I expect that for lots of folks, the convenience is well worth the price. In my case, it's the difference between getting some periodic practice and not...

The free market will decide whether the price is acceptable.

I have no use for indoor ranges myself; but if you don't care for heat, cold, wind, rain, mud, and mosquitoes, you're going to have to pay for the luxury.

Ranges are not immune from the costs of taxes*, insurance, labor, utilities, and maintenance. I don't know why some people think they are.

* except government-owned ranges like Texas City's

I was wondering why the range in Texas City was so reasonable. I am a senior so my yearly membership was only $50.00 and when I take someone with me it is either $3.25 for a local senior or $6.50 for a local non-senior. Don't know the cost for non residents of Texas City. Is an indoor range louder? I don't mind heat, cold (but not too cold) rain and I can spray myself down for the skitters. I have never been to an indoor range. I can imagine it is a lot different. From what I have seen on tv, you push a button to get your target where you want it an to get it back so that cuts out the exercise factor or walking back and forth to/from placing your target. I like the walking factor. I count that as my 2 hr workout for the day I go shooting.

As another poster noted, an indoor range is some times the only realistic choice. When I lived in Los Angeles, it was the ONLY choice short of driving 2 or 3 hours to Lake Piru. LAX Range (an indoor one) was right off the airport, and was "only" about 40 minutes away. Anyone in a big city is going to have an issue like this.

And I don't even like outdoor ranges that much -- they usually seem to frown on actual SD practice (e.g. rapid fire, drawing and shooting, moving and shooting, shooting from unusual positions and the like).

Now I am fortunate to have my own backyard big enough to shoot in. And I paid for the luxury of heat, cold, etc upfront in the purchase price (and yearly in the taxes ... )

We are indeed lucky. And if you live around here and just want to go to an indoor range, there's the Marksman which is about 30 minutes with free ladies night on Mondays....and the recently reopened indoor range in Friendswood that I have not had the opportunity to visit yet. There's a lot more competition around here as far as range fees and convenience go. I'll still go to The Arms Room on an occasional lunch hour but not nearly as often as I had planned....darnit!

Bayou Rifles Is on the other side of Manvel. It's similar to PSC, about the same cost I think. They have a 1000 yd range(not that I need it). It was a pretty nice setup as I remember, been about 10 yrs since I shot there. But it is a membership thing like PSC.
