Fun? Are you suggesting that a dealer not having a good title to a gun can pass good title to you, and that the person from whom it is proved to have been stolen, no matter how many links in the chain, cannot reclaim the gun from you which is his property? Does even the fact that you are an innocent purchaser make any difference at all?

Substitute for a gun: a car, a wristwatch, a boat, and so forth. Is a gun treated differently than the others?

An idle question? Or not?

Who, in this scenario, has the burden to collect from the dealer? The legitimate owner of the gun, or you?

As far as how the Law works, If you steal a Car, sell it to a dealership, I then go to that dealership and buy it "In Good Faith" the Car is mine.
The Orignal owner of the Car may collect the amount of the Car from the Dealership. I cannot be sued (more or less)
Isnt the Law fun?

I don't know how that happened either, USA. I had quoted you earlier, to agree with you, but I only quoted Mark in the second posting. Or I certainly meant to.

For a $200 rifle from a buddy that I know well, I won't usually bother. For a $1000 one, from some guy on Teh Innerwebs, I'll ask for an invoice listing his details, the price and the serial #. Not least because it would come in handy if I ever needed to make an insurance claim.

We've pretty much adopted this rule in our family as well. My son wanted to sell his FN because he needed some cash. williamkevin and I bought it from him. He got the cash and the gun stays in the family.

Always having a bill of sale will show that it is no longer yours and who it went to. Other than that they aren't worth much.

No one's mentioned going to a FLL, where they can run a background check. Keeping guns off the street and all that
