Funny thing. Myself and several of the fellers I knew were already carrying concealed under authority of the 12/6 rule. the big debate amongst us was about whether or not CHL was just a back door trick to get registration information on gun owners since there was no way gun owners would allow gun registration. A few went ahead and got a CHL, some decided to not worry about it and continue on. I got my CHL two years ago.

When the CHL program started, they were numbering them sequentially. Somewhere areound '97, they changed it. Instructors got numbered applications, and your application number became your license number when issued.

What was the 12/6 rule? Seems vaguely familiar, but I can't recall it for certain.

It is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

I took the Instructor class in December of 1995 and then applied for my CHL Lic. in January of '96. My Instructor number and CHL number are the same, 00010XXX. And after 7 renewals, I'm still having fun teaching the class. And I surely miss Sgt. Riddle!

I became an instructor when the program first started. My CHL number is 00006***. I always figured they just went by numbers starting with 00000001 or possibly 0001000. It would have been some what cool to have gotten CHL 00000007 : )

Some will recall that at first, the state of Texas issued two different licenses. One expired in 2 years and the other expired in 4 years and I think it was totally random on which one you received. My buddy and I took the class together; he got the 2 year license and I got a 4 year.

The gun shop I originally took the CHL class from is where I have renewed each time. They have always been very professional and limit the "this is what I did" comments from the class. Too many people taking the class THINK they know the laws and if allowed to ramble on, they only confuse the rest of the class ... One interesting note, they will not tell the student what their shooting score or test score was. They only tell them "pass or fail". They say it's for our own protection in that if one is ever involved in a shooting, the target score could not be used against them. If your score was low but passing, a prosecutor could try to paint the shooter as barely adequate to carry a firearm ... If the score was high, the prosecutor could try to make the shooter out to be a "Rambo" type who must practice alot and couldn't wait to shoot someone ...

I had one of the "two year" licenses as I mentioned in my orginal post. I'm a mid-1996 (application) guy and my license is a 9xxxxx. Still don't know the rhyme or reason.

Took test and received license in 1997. Class was in the West University police station, (near Houston) and the range test was in Pasadena. I, too, wanted it for legal car carry. Started carrying on person a year later.
