As you say, back then most of these cases concerned college students. Many colleges at that time were run like convents. Students were denied basic rights of freedom of speech and assembly. And even though the age of majority was not uniformly 18, many students were legal adults.

The pendulum has swung back, as the cliché goes, because these cases now concern drugs and weapons rather than first-amendment rights.
