Vortex strikefire is a good one... I've got 2 one on the Shorty and one the black rifle...not bad for $150 and a no questions lifetime warranty.
Not to mention the 2x magnifier that is included

For just messing around/shooting rattlesnakes - Vortex or Primary Arms
If your life or your love one's lives depend on it - Aimpoint or EOTech
Also make sure it is securely mounted to shotgun or the recoil of repeated buckshot and slugs will cause it to leave prematurely :).
Just my .02,

I pulled the cheap BSA off my buckmark and tried it on my Maverick HD shotty. I took it to GPSR on Friday to try it out. I absolutely loved it for about 10 rounds until the elevation adjustment screw broke. I'm trying to call BSA to get a new screw. Even a shotgun shouldn't snap an elevation adjustment screw so I'm chalking it up to bad luck and plan to put it back on as soon as I get a replacement screw. Wish me luck on getting a replacement screw from BSA.
I don't think I'll be able to match it at the hardware store. It's a VERY FINE thread.

+1 on the Pirmary Arms red dot. I had good luck with one on my Beretta CX4 carbine in .45 cal.

I put one of those on the AR carbine I bought for my wife, and I was surprised at the quality for the price. It's still not what I would call a "first tier" red dot optic, but it is surprisingly good for what it is.

By no means is it on par with eotec or aimpoint but it is rugged and reliable...4000 rounds down range from the ar and no problems yet

I have a Vortex Strikefire on my .22 AR upper and have been very pleased with it. I have an EoTech on the 5.56 upper for seriour use though.
I wouldn't put a red dot on a shotgun unless it was going to be a dedicated slug gun. For a HD gun, just a light and iron sights--bead sights are fine for the ranges you're likely to be using it.
