A blowup of the shooting:

In both photos, Ruby's middle finger and not the index finger appears to be through the trigger guard.

I read somewhere that Ruby's index finger was missing, and that's why he held the gun like he did. Of course, my Google-fu stinketh right now, and I'm turning up stuff that says it could have been either his left or right finger that was missing.

Maybe it's was missing because he pulled the trigger on revolvers with his middle finger?

If your grip of two hands is correct on a auto pistol, your strong hand thumb will be pointing (more or less) at the target.
