Never heard that before but .... how do you know which red ones are the good guys? They are listed as both kill and friend. What about brown? I know green snakes aren't bad hubs picks those up all the time and puts them someplace where I can't see them. Grass snake garder snake what ever they are. I will be on the lookout for the red snakes wearing the white hats and I won't send those to the snake pit in the sky.

This is how you tell the difference between a Coral snake and another one that looks very similar. A coral snake has red and yellow bands adjacent to each other. The safe snake has red and black bands next to each other.
And the version I remember is:
Red and yellow: deadly fellow
Red and black: venom lack

It is based upon the pattern of the colored rings.
A small difference that may make it more clear.
Red
on Yellow, Kill a Fellow
Red
on Black, Friend of Jack

Those two red and black snakes look simular. I can see myself outside with a magnifing glass looking at the pattern on a snake before I chop off it's head or otherwise dispose of it. I will talk to the the snake "Hey there little fella, let me inspect you, now hold real still and don't bite me." Did I fail to mention, I am terrified of ANY snake?

You want to keep the King Snakes around - among other things, they eat mice, rats, and other snakes - including venomous ones (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsnake).
The coral snake will normally flee, and will only bite as a last resort (

Yeah, and unlike the coral snake, that one will chase you down and bite you in the backside. The sound it makes is terrifying.
