There have been reported incidents of alloy framed Kimbers cracking, this issue was address by 1911 Tuner on the m1911.org forums. He explains how to check for it and how to correct it. Kimber will make good if your gun is defective.
As for the Ramped Barrel, Not all alloy framed Kimbers use the ramped barrel (my Pro Covert II is one such example).
Now as for the reliability and quality of the alloy framed Kimbers, I am perfectly comfortable carrying one and do so more often than not.
