Lots of input on this thread, But I'd still like an answer to my original question if someone has one. I simply want to know if anyone can demonstrate how in heck you open the cargo pocket quickly to draw your weapon? Why do I want to know? Because I read time and time again someone say, "I just throw it in my cargo pocket and I'm good to go." Sure, you have your weapon, sure it flops around and bangs your leg, sure it pull on your pants, but how the heck do you open those velcro closures or buttons on the cargo pocket rapidly enough if you need to? Somehow that leads me to believe they are "armed" but not "ready." Thanks.

I put my gun in the regular pocket and carry my other stuff in the cargo pocket(s).

It's easy to draw, your gun doesn't do somersaults in your front pocket, and you don't have to trust the Velcro to open easily or stay closed.

Otherwise, I agree. M&P340 goes in front pocket in a Desantis Nemesis holster. However, 2 speed loaders do fit nicely in a cargo pocket on the other side, and I don't even know they are there.

The 5.11 shorts do not have a flap over the pocket. They are a very deep pocket intended to carry a weapon. My XD9SC in the leather Ross pocket holster slides in and stays put. Top covers the weapon fully and the weight tugging on the pocket causes the top to slightly pull in close to the body. I can reach in, grab the grip fully and withdraw my XD and the holster stays put in the pocket. It reholsters very easy and it always goes into the holster right. You can stand right next to me and not tell looking down to the pocket and see inside. The front is pleated and hides outline even more. I hope that answers your question.

AHA! I knew it! Someone secretly made pants with cargo pockets that you CAN draw from. Kidding aside, I just assumed that all cargo pockets had flaps and fasteners. See what happens when you "assume." Thanks for the info.

I have a pair of those shorts also. The "deep pocket" is not the cargo pocket. It is the main front pocket, but it is very deep. Deeper than on any of my other shorts. The "exterior" cargo pocket isn't much bigger than on other cargo shorts. My only complaint about the 5.11 shorts is that the front pocket is so wide that the gun and holster together can tip over inside the pocket, instead of remaining upright. This can unnecessarily complicate the presentation of the weapon if needed.

My answer is same as TAM's. I carry only speedloaders in one of the lower pockets, and the snubby in the upper one.

I don't button the pocket.

I would agree that they are armed but not ready.

I said I had a pair of the 5.11 shorts. I didn't say they are the only pair of shorts I own. In all of my other shorts, the front pocket is deep enough to easily conceal a snubbie in a pocket holster, but not wide enough to let it tip over. The pistol is quickly and easily accessible.... ....oh, and it's a .357 magnum loaded with 125 grain Hornady Critical Defense ammo, which clock about 1300 fps from a 2" barrel. I can actually get the gun out of my pocket faster than I can draw from a belt holster, partly because if I see trouble developing, I can get my hand onto the gun's grip without drawing any attention to it. Do you still think I'm armed but not ready?

TAM. Are you misreading what I'm saying? I said, "I will revert to my original opinion that those who say they easily carry in a cargo pants/shorts CARGO pocket are "armed" but not "ready." I didn't say front pocket. Or, am I missing your point?
